“Ramadan”
April 2 – May 2, 2022
WHEREAS, the City of Pasco will continue to affirm our commitment to ensuring that its values remain
welcoming and compassionate by pursuing policies that respect the dignity and rights of our community regardless
of race, religion, immigration status, or country of origin; and
WHEREAS, the City of Pasco recognizes its Muslim community members have and continue to impact and
improve lives as teachers, engineers, doctors, healthcare workers, civil servants, small business owners, and social
workers; and
WHEREAS, throughout the pandemic our Muslim community led efforts to improve and support the health
and wellbeing of our community by providing masks, donating hundreds of pounds of food through food drives
and, organizing and promoting vaccination drives; and
WHEREAS, Ramadan is a holy month of fasting; a time for spiritual introspection, prayerfulness, reflection,
forgiveness, and appreciation for the abundance that God has provided; and
WHEREAS, Ramadan falls on the ninth month of the Islamic calendar year and begins 10-12 days earlier each
year, allowing the holy month to fall in every season; and
WHEREAS, in 2022, Ramadan begins at sunset on Saturday, April 2, and ends on the evening of Monday, May
2; and
WHEREAS, Muslim believers will practice self-sacrifice by depriving themselves of food and drink during the
daylight hours for thirty (30) days, focusing on increasing their consciousness of the presence of God in their lives,
reaffirming their commitment to the service of others that their faith compels, and expressing gratitude for the
blessings they enjoy—health, well-being, and life itself to observe a period of enlightenment and communion,
culminating with the Festival of Breaking Fast, or Eid al-Fitr, a three-day festival and one of Islam’s major holidays;
and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Blanche Barajas, Mayor of the City of Pasco, Washington, do hereby proclaim April
2 through May 2, 2022, as
"Ramadan"
in the City of Pasco and express our deepest respect to Muslims in Pasco and throughout the Tri-Cities on this
occasion and urge the community to honor and reflect on the health and wellbeing of family, friends, and fellow
citizens.
