Community Connection Consulting, 720 N. 10 th St. #A262 WWW .CConnectConsult.Com Renton, WA 98057 -Phone 206-595-1365 Greg@CConnectConsult.com The city of Pasco Washington has grown exponentially over the last decade. The city has grown over 100 positions, a 33% increase as well in retirements. Pasco residents are a majority minority population, with the largest group being Hispanic/Latino. It has become increasingly incumbent that elected officials understand the needs of their diverse communities. It is therefore necessary for councilmembers, board members, and members of the various commissions to have, develop and cultivate a keen awareness in cultural competency. They must learn to understand how their decisions impacts the residents that they serve. These decisions can be made on a broad spectrum, from planning, budgeting, scheduling, forecasting, and anticipating future needs that fosters, health, economic stability, quality of life as well as an environment that promotes public safety for all of Pasco's residents. It is important that councilmembers recognize how their decisions impact the community and how important it is to listen to community members voices and be informed in their decision-making by their community members. This facilitated discussion will focus on conversations that will increase awareness for some newly elected members of the city Council and boards and commissions along with veteran councilmembers; As a former elected official, in a city with similar demographics, I am aware of some of the pressing needs and issues that elected officials, board members, and commission members are faced with today. During the city Council retreat, there will be frank and open discussions on recognizing how implicit and explicit bias impact policymaking, and how to balance representing a district while progressing a whole community, the importance of making board/commission appointments that adequately reflect the community, and balancing national pressures as a local elected official. Promoting safety health and security through effective communication and policy planning and implementation is important in any community. The time could never be more right for seeking awareness of this right now. Building connections with all community members that reflect various demographics, creates an inclusive effort that sends the right message to all community members that they have a role to play in the growth and development of their community. Topics of discussion I Objectives, •Taking biases out of policy making decisions. •Understanding the balance between district representation and progressing the community as a whole. •Recognizing the importance of board/commission appointments that reflect the demographics of the community. •The nuance of balancing national issues, that can create local impact as an elected official.
