III. Staff Reports
a. Senior Services Highlights
• We have provided a total of 653 foot care appointments as of the end of July.
• The All Senior Picnic is being held in Richland this year. We now have buttons to
sell which are $7 in advance. Date of the picnic is Thursday September 21 from
11am to 2pm.
• With the hot days of summer upon us we have asked that Meals on Wheels to
spread the word to their drivers and senior clientele that the 1st avenue center
is a place people can come to cool off.
b. Recreation Highlights
• Pool Continues to do well averaging 366/day vs 287 (2016) & 294 (2015)
• Hosting Championships Swim Meet today
• Free Family Swim and National Night Out went well.
• Added BBQs at the pool.
• Possibly partnering with PSD to host HS Girls Swim Team
• New Program Guide is out.
• The Grand Old 4th of July went well. We added programs to this year’s events
which included a car show, softball tournament, soccer tournament and
entertainment. The parade was and continues to be a huge draw for people of
all ages. We had a total of 97 participants. Many of the participants had multiple
vehicle entered and or had a lot of people participating under their name which
contributed to the length of time of the parade.
• Registration for the Lampson Cable Bridge Run is now open
• Daddy Daughter Prom is Set for October 21 – We encourage people to register
early
c. Park Maintenance Highlights
i. Personnel Activity
• Attended Monthly Safety Meetings
• Audiograms for all field staff
ii. Park & Facility Projects
• Removed 173 trees with Fire Blight
• Removed 100 stumps of infected trees
• Installed 2 solar lights at the Softball Complex
• Opened Sylvester park restrooms
• Sprayed along bike path
• Installed new swinging bench and bike rack at Wade park
• Re-wired train for Christmas lights
• Re-worked irrigation for new PD building
• Irrigation issues at Volunteer Park
• Installed new sound system at Farmers market
• Worked at Station 84 with contractors
• Installed new barbeques at Memorial Park
iii. Cemetery
• 9 Funerals: 6 burials, 3 cremains
• $15,807.64 in services for the month
• Sprayed growth regulator
• Applied fertilizer
• Installed new light and camera
• Fire on DOT property spread to ours
iv. Special Events
• Prepared for 4th of July at the Stadium
• Prepare for the 4th of July Parade
• Prepared for the Boat Races (provide ATVs, fencing, locate irrigation)
• Assisted PW with vegetation plan
• Assisted with Lunch program at Memorial Park
• Memorial Park shelter vandalized
• Mowed vacant lots for the 4th and Boat Races
• Repaired irrigation on 20th Construction project
• Worked with volunteer to design Disc Golf signs
IV. Other
a. Vote on the name for the Disc Golf Course: The idea was presented to the board
to name the new disc golf course according to the name already given the area for
the running/walking paths that are located there, “Big Cross Disc Golf Course”.
This would help people know where it is located, would cut down on potential
confusion and would establish the name even more. Arthur Job motioned to
approve the name “Big Cross Disc Golf Course”, Nolvia Salinas seconded the
motion and the motion carried by unanimous vote.
V. Council Member Suggestions & Report
a. Nolvia Salinas
i. Asked how the interlocal agreement with the PSD worked when one of the
agencies had to take on more expenses caused by the others use of their
facilities.
• It was explained that in the case of additional expenses the visiting
agency would pay for the cost of additional expenses incurred.
b. Jason Ruud
i. Asked how the PSD use of the pool would affect the annual Dog Swim
Event.
• Plan is to close off the bib pool and only use the small one.
c. Arthur Job
i. Asked why there was not a spray park in Chiawana Park.
• Response: Chiawana Park owned by the Army Corps of Engineers
and any disturbance of the land is discouraged and must be
approved by them.
d. Thomas Davenport
i. Asked for an update on our efforts to have concession sales at the pool
• An account of the progression that led to the Coca-Cola snack
machines and prepackaged frozen treat sales was given.
ii. Said he was impressed by the professionalism displayed by the lifeguards
at the Moses Lake Water Park when visiting and that he would hope to see
the same at our pool.
e. Robert Garcia
i. Asked about Lifeguard auditing at Memorial and if this took place.
• Regular in-service training explained and “white-cap” surprise
testing explained.
ii. Suggested that we provide free ice cream at the Free Family Swim and
National Night Out.
