I. Call to order Time: 5:45 pm
II. Approval of Previous Meeting Minutes: *Both the June and July Minutes will be
approved at the next meeting.
III. Staff Reports
a. Senior Services Highlights
i. Footcare program going well, on track with last year.
ii. Submitting for updates to the Center next year that would finish the
parking lot, enclose the dumpster, install a sidewalk to the back door, etc.
b. Recreation Highlights
i. 4th of July Events went okay:
• Attendance at the Parade was up from past years
• Cardboard Regatta attendance was in line with last year.
• The Fireworks went well
• The SB & Soccer Tournaments went with the minimum number of
teams
• The Car show went well with about 30-40 vehicles in the show. Are
looking to hold it in a more shaded location next year, possibly inside
the SB Complex or at Memorial Park immediately following the Parade.
• The Entertainment was well received although there was not a
marked improvement in attendance inside the stadium.
ii. We contracted out the preparation of the Recreation Program Guide.
iii. The Pool is doing well:
• Season Pass Sales are up almost 400% over 2016
• Regular Attendance is up a thousand over 2016 at end of June
• Have ordered new more interactive spray pieces for the spray pad.
They are arriving shortly.
iv. The Summer Concerts have started and are doing well.
c. Park Maintenance Highlights
i. Personnel Activity
• Attended Monthly Staff Meeting
• Park Ranger are now working
ii. Park & Facility Projects
• Removed infected trees off of Sandifur & Road 52
• Cleared some of the brush and then framed and poured the cement
for the tee pads and basket collars at the Big Cross Disc Golf
Course
• Burn Tumbleweeds
iii. Cemetery
• Doing well
• Cleaned up after Memorial Day Event
iv. Special Events
• Prepared for and helped with 4th of July events including closing of
streets for the parade, monitoring parade staging area, setting up
stage for the band at GESA Stadium.
IV. Other
a. Disc Golf Update: The tee pads and collars for the baskets have all been poured
and are in place. The Baskets have arrived and are almost finished being
assembled. We have a volunteer that is working on designing the tee signs.
V. Council Member Suggestions & Report
a. Molly Harker
i. Asked why there are not more splashpads throughout the city.
• Response: to maintain equity, splashpads are placed in Community
parks. Plan is to place one in the West side Community Park when
developed.
b. David Milne
i. Suggested the PSD Booth Building offices as a possible location for the
4th of July Car Show.
ii. Commented that he was impressed by the organization at check-in for the
parade.
c. Arthur Job
i. Asked why there was not a spray park in Chiawana Park.
• Response: Chiawana Park owned by the Army Corps of Engineers
and any disturbance of the land is discouraged and must be
approved by them.
d. Reade Obern
i. Asked about keeping the SB complex open so people can have access to
the spray park all day. Suggested finding volunteers to act as supervisors
at the facility.
e. Robert Garcia
i. Suggested using the TRAC as a location for the 4th of July Car Show.
ii. Commented that he was impressed by the organization at check-in for the
parade.
iii. Asked if there were certification for Disc Golf Courses, and if there were
suggested trying to have the course at Big Cross be a certified course.
iv. Commented that it was good to see the Sponsor support and recognition
on the Grand Old 4th posters.
v. Suggested creating facebook events for our events so that it is easier for
people to share them and tell whether they will be attending.
