HomeMy WebLinkAbout2302 Resolution1 , RESOLUTION NO. 2302 A RESOLUTION urging the state legislature allocate funds for improvement of state highways in the vicinity of Pasco, Washington WHEREAS , State highways in the vicinity of the City of Pasco, Washington are vital to local, intrastate and interstate commerce, and WHEREAS, State Highway 395 is of particular importance to the City and to the state, due to its status as the major North-South highway East of the Cascade Mountains, and due to its status as a major truck route pursuant to the North American Free Trade Agreement, and WHEREAS, State Highway 395 is as important to this region as Interstate 5 is to the region West of the Cascade Mountains, and WHEREAS, state highway maintenance, repair and improvement have been funded, in part, by the state fuel tax, and WHEREAS, state fuel tax funds available for such maintenance, repair and improvement have been steadily declining due to increased automobile fuel efficiency, and the value of such funds have been decreasing due to inflation, and WHEREAS, the decrease in available funds has resulted in reduced maintenance, repair and improvement of state highways in the vicinity of the City, and WHEREAS, such reduced maintenance and repair has caused significant highway deterioration, and such reduced highway improvement has caused public inconvenience and significant roadway hazards to both local and non-local motorists alike, NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PASCO, WASHINGTON, DO RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS Section 1 That the City of Pasco hereby requests that the legislature allocate sufficient funds to carry out necessary highway maintenance, repair and improvement, in the vicinity of the City, because such projects will greatly improve public safety and will maintain economic vitality I -A Section 2. In the event that available funding is not sufficient to undertake such maintenance, repair and improvement, then the City of Pasco hereby urges the legislature increase the state fuel tax in an amount sufficient to carry out needed highway improvements PASSED by the City Council of the City of Pasco at a regular meeting this Ii th day of March, 1997 ATTEST.
