The City leases from the U S Army Corps of Engineers the area known as the Pasco Boat Basin A portion of it is sub-leased to Water World Marina for a Marina operation, and the west portion is maintained as a City park This area was originally purchased in 1918 by Paul Schlagel In 1951 he sold it to the U S Corps of Engineers V. DISCUSSION Staff was approached by Mrs Viola Schlagel Berndt regarding the possibility of changing the name of Boat Basin Park to Schlagel Park The subject was discussed at the March Park & Recreation Advisory Council, and the Council voted unanimously to recommend to the City Council to change the name of the park There are a couple of reasons for this 1) Boat Basin Park, while identifying a specific geographic area, is in itself somewhat of a generic name 2) Changing the name to Schlagel Park would memorialize one of the first families in the Pasco area and would enhance the history of Pasco I have discussed this with the Army Corps of Engineers and they indicate it is the City's prerogative to name the park as we see fit Therefore, they have no problem with the name change Staff would recommend that City Council, by resolution, change the name of the park VI.
