I REFERENCE(S)
1 Resolution No 1981
II ACTION REQUESTED OF COUNCIL/STAFF RECOMMENDATIONS
12/13 DISCUSSION
12/20 MOTION I move to approve Resolution No , adjusting the
maximum car allowance
III HISTORY AND FACTS BRIEF
A) The use of car allowances in lieu of maintaining a motor pool to
provide mobility of city employees in the conduct of their daily
business, has been in place since 1981 Resolution No 1981,
approved in December 1991, set forth the conditions under which car
allowances would be approved, but did not increase the maximum
car allowance, thus, the maximum authorization remains at the level
established more than 12 years ago in 1981
IV DISCUSSION
A) The cost of automobiles themselves have risen dramatically over the
course of the past 12 years In addition, maintenance and fuel costs,
as well as insurance, have escalated over that period of time In
addition, car allowances became subject to withholding and social
security taxes last year, effectively reducing the car allowance
B) In view of the time period which has passed since the maximum
allowance was established and the related cost influences, staff
recommends the maximum allowance be set at $350 per month No
other changes are recommended in the car allowance policy
