A RESOLUTION supporting the continued development of the
Columbia Basin Project and providing comments on
the 1989 draft environmental impact statement
for said project.
WHEREAS, the City of Pasco, Washington, located at the
southern end of the Columbia Basin Irrigation Project is a major
distribution and transportation center servicing the agricultural
industry of the Lower Columbia Basin area; and
WHEREAS, the City of Pasco encourages expansion of the
agricultural sector of the economy and is actively working to
provide expanded services to the agricultural industry; and
WHEREAS, continuation of the Columbia Basin Project will
lead to greater diversification in crop production as well as
higher crop values; and
WHEREAS, changes in Columbia Basin agricultural production
will result in value added food processing and ancillary economic
expansion for the region and state; and
WHEREAS, continued development of the Columbia Basin
Project will enhance the quality of life for the residents of
Pasco and the region in general through increased employment and
recreational opportunities; and
WHEREAS, environmental data from the September 1989 draft
environmental impact on the Columbia Basin Project indicates
implementation of alternative 2, for continued development of the
project will have negligible adverse impacts on the environment;
NOW, THEREFORE:
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PASCO:
That the City Council does hereby support alternate 2, the
preferred alternate, for continued development of the Columbia
Basin Project.
FURTHER, the City Council strongly recommends that the
Bureau of Reclamation proceed with the project to preserve and
enhance public resources, past public expenditures and to
strengthen the nation's position in the global economy.
PASSED by the City Council of the City of Pasco this
day of December 1989.
