RESOLUTION NO. 1876
A RESOLUTION requesting that the Association of Washington
Cities join with and seek a cooperative effort with
other interested and/or affected organizations for
changes in the state sentencing ranges for crimes
against property and involving controlled substances.
WHEREAS, On February 6, 1988 the Pasco City Council passed
Resolution No. 1863, a resolution declaring the Pasco City
Council's dissatisfaction with the current sentencing ranges
prescribed by the Washington State Legislature under the
provisions of the 1981 Sentencing Reform Act; and
WHEREAS, Since the passage of Resolution No. 1863, other
Washington cities have passed similar resolutions to change the
current state sentencing ranges for crimes against property and
narcotics crimes; and
WHEREAS, Pasco City Council reaffirms its commitment to
make known to the Washington State Legislature the detrimental
effects the existing sentencing ranges are having on the efforts
of local communities to combat crime throughout the State of
Washington and to join in a consolidated effort to bring about
legislative change to the Washington statutes prescribing the
current sentencing ranges, NOW, THEREFORE,
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PASCO, WASHINGTON, DO
RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. The Association of Washington Cities should
join and seek to create an alliance with other interested and/or
affected organizations (such as county prosecuting attorneys;
Association of Washington Counties; Washington Chiefs and
Sheriffs Association; crime victim groups, etc.) with the goal of
changing the current state sentencing ranges for crimes against
property and narcotics crimes to require longer periods of
incarceration as well as a greater range of maximum sentencing to
be utilized by the state's trial judges.
PASSED by the City Council and APPROVED by the Mayor this
