RESOLUTION NO. 1816
A RESOLUTION providing support for the expansion of the
agricultural industry in Franklin County.
WHEREAS, the City of Pasco functions as a service
center for the Columbia Basin Irrigation District, one of the
highest agricultural production areas in the country which is
extremely well suited for the production of vegetable crops; and
WHEREAS, there is a specific need for a local vegetable
processing and handling facility (sweet corn, asparagus,
cucurbit, and all species of cole crops). A local processing
plant would assure a better product because of less time required
between picking, handling and processing. This would mean a
greater return to the farmer because currently freight costs to
the remote and distant plants are being paid by or withheld from
the farmer; and
WHEREAS, a local processing plant would give impetus and
encouragement to the agricultural community to grow those crops
capable of being processed locally and assist in crop rotation
programs for growers; and
WHEREAS, the geographic location of Franklin County is
blessed with transportation for any or all projected markets and
is readily accessible to railroads, barge facilities,
highways, and air service; NOW, THEREFORE,
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PASCO, WASHINGTON, DO
RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
That all efforts be made to procure a study concerning the
feasibility of the financing, construction, and subsequent use of
a processing plant capable of handling the agricultural products
grown in this community.
