A RESOLUTION of the City of Pasco, Washington, requesting the
Secretary of the United States Department of
Transportation to withdraw the Fifty-five (55)
miles an hour speed-limit restriction on certain
portions of interstate and other highways designed
for higher speed travel
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Pasco whole-heartedly
supports the Interstate Highways Program and the continued provision
of quality roadways throughout Pasco, the State of Washington and the
nation, and
WHEREAS, the continued provision of a good highway system is
a critical element of our local, State and national economy by fostering
the efficient and effective movement of people and products, and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Pasco recognizes that
the Fifty-five (55) miles per hour speed limit restriction is incompatible
with those highways of this and other states that were designed to accommodate
speeds of Seventy (70) miles per hour or more, and
WHEREAS, the Fifty-five (55) miles per hour speed limit promotes
disobedience of the law by otherwise law-abiding citizens, is almost universally
ignored on the interstate highways outside of congested urban areas,
and unnecessarily restricts the movement of traffic on highways designed
to accommodate high speeds and, thus, adversely affects the local, State
and national economy, NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PASCO
Section 1 That the Fifty-five (55) miles per hour speed limit
restriction is inappropriate as applied to the interstate and other highways
outside of congested urban areas, where such highways are designed
for speeds of Seventy (70) miles per hour and more
Section 2 That the Secretary of the United States Department
of Transportation should cause the removal of the Fifty-five (55) miles
per hour speed limit restriction on the interstates and other highways
of this nation designed for higher speed travel and outside of congested
urban areas
