HomeMy WebLinkAbout1712 ResolutionRESOLUTION NO. 1712
A RESOLUTION urging the State Legislature to increase its
financial support to cities for provision of fire protection
services to state facilities.
WHEREAS, the State Legislature in 1979 recognized the
costs cities incur in providing fire protection services to state
facilities and,
WHEREAS, the State of Washington appropriates funds to the
Department of Community Development for distribution of basic
fire protection payments to jurisdictions based on the square
footage of state facilities in each city and,
WHEREAS, this appropriation has not grown over time to
reflect effects of inflation and increases in the number and size
of state facilities and,
WHEREAS, the City of Pasco delivers basic fire protection
and emergency medical services to the Columbia Basin College and
other state facilities in the community and,
WHEREAS, Pasco's yearly receipt of $3,711.00 to protect
over 303,751 square feet of building space has not grown since
1979 and,
WHEREAS, these payments do not adequately compensate Pasco
for fire services and equipment it provides to protect state
facilities and,
WHEREAS, at least 93 Washington cities also provide fire
protection services for which they are similarly under
compensated.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Pasco City Council
urges these cities and towns, together with the Association of
Washington Cities and its legislative representatives, to
aggressively pursue adequate and increasing state funding for
local fire protection services in the current session of the
Legislature.
