KENNEWICK RESOLUTION NO. 85 -04
A JOINT RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCILS OF THE CITIES OF
PASCO AND KENNEWICK WASHINGTON declaring February 22, 1985 as
Arvid Grant Day and directing the Inter-city Bridge Committee to
take such reasonable actions necessary to honor Arvid Grant in
the cities of Pasco and Kennewick.
WHEREAS, on January 30, 1985, President Ronald Reagan
presented to Arvid Grant in the Oval Office at the White House,
one of thirteen presidental awards for design excellence, for the
inter-city cable stay bridge across the Columbia River between
Pasco and Kennewick Washington; and
WHEREAS, the jury of design experts who selected the
thirteen award winners have stated that:
"The inter-city bridge is not just a great technical
accomplishment; it is a work of art. The use of steel and
pre-stress concrete in striking white color, the
simplicity of the connections of its components, the
elegance of the bridge lines, and the clarity of its
structural behavior enhanced the beauty of this
utilitarian structure in ways that can be perceived by
both experts and laymen. The example of the inter-city
bridge should be followed by both technicians and federal
authorities in the solution of difficult problems."

WHEREAS, this Presidential Award for design excellence
brings both honor and national recognition to the cities of Pasco
and Kennewick and should be regarded by the local citizenry as
their own Presidential Award for their own dedication and
committment to the construction of the cable stay bridge; and
WHEREAS, it is appropriate that a special day be set aside
to honor Arvid Grant for his achievement and for the honor and
recognition brought to the cities of Pasco and Kennewick, NOW,
THEREFORE,
THE CITY COUNCILS OF THE CITIES OF PASCO AND KENNEWICK,
WASHINGTON, DO RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
1. February 22, 1985 is hereby declared to be Arvid Grant
Day in the cities of Pasco and Kennewick Washington.
2. The Inter-city Bridge Committee is directed to take
reasonable action appropriate to honoring Arvid Grant in the
cities of Pasco and Kennewick and to commemorate February 22,
1985 as Arvid Grant Day in the respective cities.
