RESOLUTION NO. 908
A RESOLUTION RELATING TO INITIATIVE 261, PRIVATE
SALE OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES, AND DECLARING
THE OPPOSITION OF THE MAYOR .AND COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF PASCO TO THIS INITIATIVE.
WHEREAS, Initiative 261 has been placed on the ballot for the general election
in November 1972, and if adopted would remove the State of Washington from the opera-
tion of retail liquor stores; and
WHEREAS, the sharing of liquor profits and taxes constitutes a material portion
of city revenues from state -collected sources which would be lost if this Initiative
passes; and
WHEREAS, the City of Pasco will lose over $90,000 per year from liquor profits
if Initiative 261 is passed by the people; and
WHEREAS, research indicates that the net result of passage of Initiative 261
will be both higher liquor prices and higher taxes imposed on all citizens regardless
of whether 'they purchase liquor; and
WHEREAS, profits from liquor sales which have provided the revenue to support
important municipal services would be retained by private corporations and would not
be available to aid in the financing of municipal operations such as law enforcement
activities which are required as a result of use of intoxicants; NOW, THEREFORE
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PASCO DO HEREBY RESOLVE:
Section 1. That the Mayor and Council of the City of Pasco oppose passage of
Initiative 261.
Section 2. This Resolution shall be in full force and effect after its passage as re-
quired by law.
