RESOLUTION N O . 846
A RESOLUTION PROTESTING THE CLOSURE OF THE N REACTOR
AT HANFORD , WASHINGTON.
WHEREAS, The Tri -City area consisting of Pasco, Richland and Kennewick,
Washington over a period of years has been actively engaged in a diversifica-
tion program to ease the adverse economic effect of the eventual closure of
weapons -producing nuclear reactors; and
WHEREAS, One of these diversification programs has been the peaceful use
of atomic energy to produce electrical power; and
WHEREAS, The N Reactor with related heat exchangers and steam turbines
for the production of electrical energy was constructed and has been operating
in the Hanford reservation;; and
WHEREAS, The continued operation of this reactor in the forseeable future is
vital to the Tri -City Area, the State of Washington and that portion of the North-
west served by the Bonneville Power Administration in order to stabilize employ-
ment, to assist the economy and to furnish vital power needs; and
WHEREAS, This N Reactor was precipitously placed on stand-by basis on
January 29, 1971 apparently due to the lack of Federal funding; and
WHEREAS, If authority and funding for the continued operation of this N Reactor
is not promptly restored, the economic repercussions in this area will be catastrophic,
NOW, THEREFORE
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PASCO:
Section 1. That the President of the United States be immediately informed of the
extreme concern of the City Council of the City of Pasco.
Section 2. That the President be requested to revise the budget recommendation of
his staff so that fundis for the continued operation of the N Reactor are included in
the new Federal Budget.
Section 3. That the President be requested to advise the proper officials of the
Atomic Energy Commission to return the N Reactor to operating status at the very
earliest possible moment.
Section 4. This Resolution shall be in full force and effect after its passage
as required by law.

Dear President Nixon:
The enclosed resolution of the City of Pasco, Washington
regarding the shut -down of the N -dual purpose reactor at
Hanford is self explanatory.
May I urge you to reverse the staff decision which with-
held funds for the reactors continued operation. This is
vitally important to our area.
