RESOLUTION NO. 706
WHEREAS, parallel with the growth of nuclear industry throughout the 'free
world, there necessarily is a steady increase in the volume of radioactive
materials, waste and otherwise, being transported by various means includ-
ing ocean-going vessels, and barges, and
WHEREAS, a significant volume of such materials will be consigned to or ship-
ped from points in the State of Washington, and
WHEREAS, such shipments offer new sources of commercial traffic, port revenue,
and new industrial activity to the Port of Pasco and environs, and
WHEREAS, technically competent persons have formally explained, at a brief-
ing session on the 7th day of February, 1967, the potential or theoretical
radiological hazards as well as the customary safety procedures and routines
followed to safeguard the public health and safety in connection with such
transportation and handling, and
WHEREAS, we believe the representatives of local governmental, civic, pro-
fessional, and commercial organizations present at the briefing session
constitute a cross-section of responsible citizens of the community of Pasco,
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PASCO DO RESOLVE
AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. That feeling we have a realistic appraisal of the values and pos-
sible disadvantages of moving radioactive materials through the Port of Pasco,
we do hereby endorse efforts of the State of Washington to seek to build up
volume in commercial traffic in radioactive materials, with due precautions to
protect the public health and safety.
Section 2. That we will take pride in having the Port of Pasco identified as
a NUCLEAR PORT and as a pioneer among progressive, forward-looking
ports seeking, rather than• discouraging, the indirect as well as direct benefits
from nuclear technology and advances.

Section 3. This Resolution shall be in full force and effect after its
passage as required by law.
