WHEREAS, the Northern Pacific Railroad, the Great Northern
Railroad, the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railroad, and the Chicago,
Burlington and Quincy Railroad have made known that they intend to merge
into what will be the largest Railroad in .the United States, and
WHEREAS, in doing so they make known that many thousands of
employees will be laid off and many more thousands will be forced to
transplant their residences to other terminals in order that they may
continue to be employed, and
WHEREAS, the City of Pasco will, it would seem, suffer a loss of
between 200 and 300 employees now employed by the Northern. Pacific
Railroad at Pasco, and
WHEREAS, this loss, would be a 'severe blow to the economy of
.said city in as much as over one and one-half million dollars..would be lost
to: the city in wages, and
WHEREAS, the,financial standing of these Railroads do not reflect
any distress, and
WHEREAS, this merger could -be construed a.s to leave the opinion
that these railroads are striving to create a monopoly which the.public would
have no recourse in correcting,. NOW,, THEREFORE,
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE: CITY OF PASCO DO RESOLVE AS. FOLLOWS:
The City Council of the. City of Pasco does hereby protest any merger
by these railroads.
PASSED by the City Council and APPROVED, by the Mayor this 4Z day
of January, 1961.
