HomeMy WebLinkAbout05.01.14 Park Board Minutes 1 PARK & RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES May 1, 2014 CALL TO ORDER: Tom called the meeting to order at 5:35 p.m. Board Members Present: Staff Present: Jennifer Martinez Rick Terway, Director, A&CS Tom Davenport Dan Dotta, Facilities Manager Arthur Job Nolan Harper, Lead Recreation Specialist Edmon Daniels Abigail Kidd Saul Martinez MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING: Motion was made by Abigail and seconded by Edmon to approve the minutes of the March 6, 2014 meeting. Motion carried unanimously. STAFF REPORTS: Recreation Services • On April 3, we transported 13 youth to WSU for a campus tour. The kids were able to talk to a couple of college students and ask various questions related to academic scholarships. Also, we ran into Lupe Sanchez in the lunch room, who was our gym supervisor last summer and now is a student at WSU. The hope is that these kids will start to think about what they need to do in order to prepare themselves for college and what financial options are available • New Class (Crossfit – Ages 13-17) Improve cardio through building strength, flexibility, power and speed. Located on Rd 68 next to Maverik Gas Station • Other Classes June - Cheer Camp/Dance Camp /Tennis Camp /Musical First Steps/T-Ball July – Basketball/Tennis Camp/Lacrosse/Karate • Softball and baseball tournaments the next four weekends • Pool is scheduled to open June 7 (See Rec. Guide pages 8 & 9 for registration details.) Pasco Senior Center • The Volunteer Reception went very well. We had about 125 volunteers, guests and staff • Kid’s (ages 13 to 18) pool tournament planned for Wednesday May 21 from 4 pm to 7 pm • Indoor Community Yard Sale planned for Saturday May 31 from 10 am to 2 pm 2 • Hosted dignitaries from Peru, the Sister City to Pasco, on Monday April 28. There were about 20 people here from both the City of Pasco and Peru. Maintenance Personnel Activity • Attended Monthly Safety Meetings • Completed CPR/First Aid training • Seasonal staff returning Park & Facility Projects • Burned tumbleweeds • Built new office at Chiawana, moved half the staff to Chiawana • Replaced pump at Kurtzman and Memorial • Converted the last line of domestic water on RD84 to irrigation water • Replaced three trees on Chapel Hill and 4th Ave roundabout due to auto accidents • Prepare Memorial pool for season • Repaired drinking fountains in various parks and Softball Complex • Repair fence between Liberty Park and the irrigation canal 3 times • Planted flower beds • Started fertilization • Assisted Planning Dept. with preparing HUD homes for sale • Constructed base for new sign at the Library • Irrigation repairs: 13 mainline, 2 valve and 4 lateral repairs. Cemetery • Performed 13 funerals, 9 burials and 4 cremations • Completed 1 pre-need contract, installed 8 stones • Planted summer stock Special Events • Kurtzman splash pad complete OTHER: • Rick updated the board on Kurtzman Spray Park opening. Discussed hours of operation. • Rick displayed the plans for the new park at Rd 60 and Three Rivers Drive. • Rick informed the board the new Recreation Manager will be starting May 27. The meeting was adjourned at 6:20 p.m. to tour the new Kurtzman Spray Park.
