HomeMy WebLinkAbout03.06.14 Park Board Minutes 1 PARK & RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES March 6, 2014 CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 5:45 p.m. Board Members Present: Staff Present: Jennifer Martinez Rick Terway, Director, A&CS Arthur Job Dan Dotta, Facilities Manager Craig Howell Nolan Harper, Lead Recreation Specialist Edmon Daniels Robert Garcia Saul Martinez MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING: Motion was made by Edmon and seconded by Jennifer to approve the minutes of the February 6, 2014 meeting. Motion carried unanimously. STAFF REPORTS: Recreation • First softball tournament will be held this weekend (March 8) called Beast of the East. 20 teams from all of the state will compete from Saturday at 8:00 a.m. through Sunday at 7:00 p.m. • Taking Youth softball registration now. Practice will start the second week of May and season will run mid-April through first week of June. Ages 5-6 T-Ball, Coach Pitch 7-8 and Machine Pitch 9-10. • New programs in the upcoming brochure: • Free LaCross Clinic • Crossfit Program • Musical First Steps • Dance/Cheer Program • Pool Tournament at Senior Center • Indoor Yard Sale at Senior Center • Update on Intern Cody Hanshew. He has had a hand in implementing the programs that I just mentioned and has been a huge asset to our department. Senior Center: • Foot Care Report: February served 68 unduplicated clients and 104 number of units for Franklin County. February served 5 unduplicated clients and 10 number of units for Walla Walla. 2 • We have received a new computer to help with the Membership Card system. All patrons who frequent the center are required to get a membership card. This is being done now. • The security camera system in the center is up and running. We have installed one camera outside the center in the Portico area (main entrance to the center) and there are 7 other cameras inside the center. • We are working on acquiring a major sponsor for the annual All Senior Picnic for the next 3 years. We should have more information within the next few weeks. Maintenance Personnel Activity • Attended Monthly Safety Meetings • Completed learning modules required by the city • Hired new Chief Groundsman Park & Facility Projects • Burned tumbleweeds • Leaf removal • Completed equipment repairs for the season • Pruned trees on the west side of town • Completed equipment inventory • Snow removal • Chip tree trimmings from all the trees removed for PW and the Streets Dept • Installed pool circulation pumps • Installed filters for irrigation system at Sunny Meadows Cemetery • Performed 11 funerals; 9 burials and 2 cremations • Completed 2 pre-need contracts and installed 7 stones Special Events • Contractor started painting railings at the Softball Complex OTHER: • Head Start is waiting for responses to the applications they distributed for the Community Garden. • Kurtzman Spray Park completion date is April 1, with the park opening May 1. • Saul Martinez announced very positive statistics concerning the City of Pasco. • Board and staff discussed the low attendance at the Senior Center. • Craig asked about controlling the birds and geese at Wade Park. • Jennifer inquired if the aquatics center would be considered again. • Robert suggested Skate Park options. The meeting was adjourned at 6:40 p.m.
