PARK & RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD
MINUTES
February 6, 2014
CALL TO ORDER:
The meeting was called to order at 5:40 p.m.

SELECTION OF CHAIRPERSON:
Edmon nominated Tom Davenport as Chairperson for 2014. Arthur seconded. Motion carried
unanimously.
MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING:
Motion was made by Jason and seconded by Craig to approve the minutes of the December 5,
2013 meeting. Motion carried unanimously.
STAFF REPORTS:
Recreation
• Intern (Cody Henshaw) started Feb.3 and will spend 2 weeks with each staff member
through April 11.
• Volunteer Reception will be held at Pasco Senior Center April 24. Need photos of
members for the event.
• 1800 signed up for the Cable Bridge Run, with 1500 showing up to run on Dec. 21.
• Upcoming Spring programs: Youth Softball, Karate, Youth Soccer, Youth Softball, Spanish
Workshop, Hip Hop Dance.
• First Softball Tournament on March 8.
Senior Center
• Foot Care Quarterly Report – 102 people served for Franklin County and 9 served for
Walla Walla County during the month of January.
• Classes offered: Wood Carving, China Painting, Wave Makers Fitness Training at Oasis
Physical Therapy, Cell phone 101, Email Basics, Facebook Made Simple, Usable
Technology and Smart Phones and Tablets.

• AARP tax aid started Feb. 3 and runs through April 14. Booked through mid-March.
• Senior Tech classes Monday 2-3 p.m.
• AARP Smart Driver 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. twice per month.
Maintenance
Personnel Activity
• Attended Monthly Safety Meetings
• Attended pesticide spray training
Park & Facility Projects
• Burned tumbleweeds
• Leaf removal
• Repaired small equipment for beginning of the season
• Repaired vandalized lights at Memorial
• Painted park signs for season
• Contractor repaired pool circulation pumps
• Replaced lamps at Library with LED bulbs
• Removed 11 large trees: 1 @ Wayside, 2 @ City Hall, 3 @ Volunteer, 1 @ Sylvester and 2
at Memorial. Pruned large trees at City Hall, Volunteer, Memorial, Wehe and Library
Cemetery
• Performed 8 funerals; 6 burials and 2 cremations
• Completed 2 pre-need contracts, installed 4 stones
Special Events
• Assisted Recreation with Yoke’s dinner at Senior Center
• Assisted Recreation with State Cross Country race
• Installed 3 irrigation lines and 5 trees on 4th Ave project
• Police Department arrested 4 individuals who shot out the park lights at Memorial Park
($6,500 damage)
• Front windows at Library shot out ($1,200 damage)
OTHER:
Kurtzman Spray Park:
• Rick noted the building has been demolished and the spray toys are here. Waiting for
weather to improve; completion date April 1.
Richardson Park:
• Rick suggested a basketball court and shelter be added, park board agreed.
Library Remodel:
• Remodel is finished, with painting and sign to be completed soon.

Community Garden:
• The city will be working with the Head Start Program and Master Gardeners in creating
community gardens. Robert Garcia noted a garden would be a good science project for
students, if located near a school.
Other:
• One member suggested additional marketing for the Cable Bridge Run.
