I. PURPOSE:
To establish guidelines for automatic Malware Scanning of Removable Computer Media
prior to access or use on city computer systems.
II. DEPARTMENTS AFFECTED:

III. DEFINITIONS:
Malware: Software of malicious intent/impact such as viruses, worms, and Spyware.
Removable Media: Device or media that is readable and/or writeable by the end user
and is able to be moved from computer to computer without modification to the
computer. This includes flash memory devices such as thumb drives, cameras, MP3
players and PDAs; removable hard drives (including hard drive -based MP3 players);
optical disks such as CD and DVD disks; any commercial music and software disks.
IV. POLICY:
All city computers will have software that enforces and performs malware scanning of
removable media prior to allowing access to data. Standardized software will be
implemented and maintained by the Information Services Division, and will have the
ability to prevent end users from disabling scanning.
Should standardized software be incompatible with a city computer system, Information
Services will research and implement an acceptable solution on a case by case basis.
