HomeMy WebLinkAbout05.02.13 Park Board MinutesPARK & RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES MAY 2, 2013 CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 5:30 p.m. by Abigail Kidd, Chairperson. Board Members Present: Tom Davenport Edmon Daniels Mike Matthews Abigail Kidd Jim Michaud Saul Martinez Staff Present: Rick Terway, Director A &CS, Dan Dotta, Facilities Manager, Carleen Hanscom, Recreation Services Manager and Allison Mathews, Recreation Specialist Guest: Jim Spence, representing Vortex. MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING: Motion was made and seconded to approve the minutes of the April 4, 2013 meeting. Motion carried unanimously. STAFF REPORTS: Recreation • Summer Recreation Guide. • Tournaments. • At the Dia De Los Ninos program that the library hosted at Memorial Park on April 27, there were 1,200 people in attendance. Nolan hosted a booth with one of our part -time staff to promote our programs. • Lifeguard training classes start on May 13; this class is already full. We will be offering a second one starting June 10. • Channel Cats started practicing at Memorial Pool on April 29, 2013. • May is Bike Month and the Bicycle Challenge for the 3 Rivers area started May 1 and goes through the 31. Senior Center Foot Care • Funds for Foot Care will be cut about $4000 for the remainder of 2013. 1 • The Foot Care program may have to be cut short for this year. Instead of ending in mid - December we may need to end in mid - November. • Donations for the program seem to be going strong and hopefully will continue for the remainder of the year. Grand Old 4th of July • Plans for GO4 are well underway. • Advertising for the GO4 will begin in early June. • Parade and Fireworks are both scheduled for Thursday July 41h • There is a full schedule of events in the current recreation brochure. All Senior Picnic • Plans for this year's picnic are underway. • Pasco is this year's host. • The date is Thursday September 19th at TRAC from 11 am to 2 pm. Maintenance Personnel Activity • Attended Monthly Safety Meetings • Attended Coaching Employees seminar • Attended Pesticide Class we sponsored • New Facilities I position Park & Facility Projects • Burned tumbleweeds • Replace flower baskets for the seasons • Installed soccer goals and laid out the fields at 36 Soccer • Trenched new electrical line for Water Treatment • Fertilized parks and athletic fields • Installed SoftFal in the playgrounds • Started Memorial Pool for the season • Installed new trash containers in the parks and downtown • Irrigation repairs: 10 mainline, 5 valves Cemetery • Built new Gold Star Memorial • New sidewalks poured in Urn Garden • Planted flowers for season • Preformed 9 funerals; 4 burials and 5 cremations • Completed 5 pre -need contract, installed 8 stones Special Events • Kiwanis Shelter completed, planted 2 trees and flowers N OTHER: Kurtzman Spray Park: Jim Spence, representing Vortex, presented 4 spray park options. Board and staff then discussed the options. MOTION: Mike moved to recommend Spray Park option #4 with square concrete pad and two spray cannons added. Tom seconded. Motion carried unanimously. Tom also suggested some kind of shade structure at the spray park. The meeting was adjourned at 7:05 p.m.
