The following Administrative Order is effective February 10, 2011 and supersedes
Administrative Order No. 72, Section VII, dated November 22 , 1993 .
I. PURPOSE:
This Administrative Order is issued to establish a policy and expectations regarding the
use of paid Civil Leave (Jury Duty and Witness Service) .

IV. POLICY:
A. Jury Duty: Any regular employee (full or regular part time) who is called for jury
duty is allowed a paid leave of absence for the hours required for jury service which
coincide with his/her scheduled work hours.
Seasonal, temporary, irregular part time employees called for jury duty will be
given unpaid release time in order to participate.
B . Witness Service : Any employee who is subpoenaed to appear as a witness in a
court case or administrative proceeding due to his/her employment with the City
shall be paid at his/her regular hourly rate for hours required to appear which
coincide with his/her scheduled work hours.
This paid provision is not applicable if the employee is an expert witness for a party
other than the City or as a witness in a case for which the employee is a party.
V. PROCEDURE :
A . Jury Duty and Witness Service :
1 . Employees are to submit an absence request form with a copy of the
notice/subpoena to their manager as soon as they are notified of their need to
perform jury duty or witness service. They must also keep their manager
apprised of their daily civil leave responsibilities.
2 . Jury/Witness fees (exclusive of mileage) paid to employees for jury
duty/witness service for time for which they also receive paid civil leave are
to be turned in to payroll .
3 . Employees are expected to return to work if released from jury/witness duty
prior to the close of the scheduled work day, unless directed otherwise by their
manager.
