A RESOLUTION REGARDING MAD COW DISEASE.
WHEREAS, the City of Pasco is home to many persons employed in the beef cattle
industry; and
WHEREAS, the recent cases of "mad cow disease" in Canada and as close to home as
Mabton Washington have illustrated the homogeneous nature of the beef cattle industry that exists
throughout North America; and
WHEREAS, the economic impacts of the resulting global beef embargos imposed on
United States and Canadian beef industries is wreaking substantial socio-economic harm to
individuals and communities alike; and
WHEREAS, it is imperative that appropriate, science-based safeguards be put in place to
assure relative safety of the North American beef products so that such global embargos may be
withdrawn and the associated socio-economic impacts can be ameliorated; and
WHEREAS, the citizens of Pasco are dependent upon the United States Government to
define and implement such safeguards and to restore global consumer confidence in the North
American beef cattle industry;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF PASCO:
SECTION 1: That the United States Congress and President are hereby urged to adopt such
science-based measures as are deemed necessary and appropriate to restore global and domestic
consumer confidence in the North American beef cattle industry at the soonest possible time.
SECTION 2: That in furtherance of improving local socio-economic circumstances, the
Mayor of the City of Pasco is hereby authorized and directed to address this Resolution to the
attention of all appropriate federal and state officials.
