A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING
THE TRI-CITIES LEWIS & CLARK BICENTENNIAL COMMEMORATION
WHEREAS, President Thomas Jefferson's efforts 200 years ago to explore the uncharted
West set the Lewis & Clark Expedition of 1803-06 on a remarkable scientific, trade and
diplomatic journey that changed our nation; and
WHEREAS, a multi-year, national bicentennial commemoration of the Lewis & Clark
Expedition is being held 2003-2006; and
WHEREAS, the Corps of Discovery traveled to the present-day cities of Richland, Pasco
and Kennewick, and present-day counties of Benton and Franklin; and
WHEREAS, the Tri-Cities Lewis & Clark Bicentennial offers an opportunity for the Tri-
Cities to focus attention on the cultural resources and heritage of the region, as well as the unique
water resources of the Columbia and Snake rivers; and
WHEREAS,the bicentennial commemoration serves as an impetus for completing public
works projects and adding amenities to highlight cultural resources and beautify riverfront areas
along the Columbia and Snake rivers; and
WHEREAS, working together on Lewis & Clark projects of mutual importance and
interest will serve to expand inter-community cooperation and foster goodwill among the
residents of the cities of Richland, Pasco and Kennewick, and Benton and Franklin counties; and
WHEREAS, the years 2003-2006 offer the opportunity to develop educational, heritage
and tourism programs to engage residents and visitors traveling the Lewis & Clark Trail in the
history, lore and cultural resources of the region, thereby creating positive economic growth for
the region; and
WHEREAS, the three-year commemoration will encourage residents and visitors to use
area rivers, parks and historical sites as locations for their special events and to invite
organizations to theme conferences, fund-raising activities and other celebrations to highlight the
Lewis & Clark Expedition and the region's cultural, historical, natural and recreational
amenities; and
WHEREAS, the study of a unique chapter in American history, now part of our regional
heritage, is an opportunity to explore and understand our historical American Indian and
European cultures, enlighten our minds and unite our diverse interests;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Benton County Commissioners,
Franklin County Commissioners, Kennewick City Council, Pasco City Council, Richland City
Council, West Richland City Council, Tri-Ports and the Tri-Cities Visitor & Convention Bureau
endorse and support the Tri-Cities Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Commemoration.
