A RESOLUTION supporting the Columbia River Channel
Deepening Project.
WHEREAS, the deep draft navigation channel in the Columbia River is a
National asset that provides competitive access to world markets for goods
throughout the Columbia Basin; and
WHEREAS, there are over 59,000 jobs influenced by Columbia River
maritime activity throughout the Pacific Northwest; and
WHEREAS, the deep draft navigation channel in the Columbia River
facilitated the movement of$14 billion in water-borne cargo in 2000; and
WHEREAS, the deepening project is a top marine transportation priority
for the lower Columbia River, providing for deepening of the navigation channel
from 40' to 43'; and
WHEREAS, the channel deepening must be accomplished to
accommodate the deep draft cargo vessels that increasingly dominate the world
fleet; and
WHEREAS, the Ports of Portland and Saint Helens in Oregon, and the
Ports of Kalama, Longview, Vancouver, Woodland and Pasco in Washington
have joined efforts to promote the channel deepening project; and
WHEREAS, the project will fully comply with all applicable federal and
state environmental laws and regulations; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PASCO:
That the City Council of Pasco, Washington, hereby endorses and adds
its support to the Columbia River Channel Deepening Project and is willing to
advise state and federal officials of this support.
PASSED by the City Council of the City of Pasco at a regular meeting this
5' day of November, 2001.
