HomeMy WebLinkAbout2429 Resolution RESOLUTION NO. bgq,3L`� A RESOLUTION of the City of Pasco in support of preparing an Environmental Impact Statement for Restarting the Fast Flux Test Facility at Hanford. WHEREAS, medical isotopes are increasingly being used in research and in providing new, cost-effective, cutting-edge technologies for the diagnosis and .treatment of disease, including cancer, heart disease and arthritis; and WHEREAS, the United States is importing more than 90 percent of the reactor-produced medical isotopes currently used to save a significant number of the lives of our citizens; and WHEREAS, market projections for utilization of medical isotopes for diagnosis and treatment show our country will need new production sources to assure a domestic supply to meet the increasing demand; and WHEREAS, the FFTF was designed, constructed and safely operated as a state-of-the-art reactor with world class isotope production capabilities and is the newest, most sophisticated reactor in the U. S. Department of Energy complex and, as such, is an irreplaceable national asset; and WHEREAS, the FFTF is presently being maintained in a stand-by mode; and WHEREAS, the public deserves an opportunity to be involved in the decision- .making process to consider whether the FFTF should be restarted or permanently shut down; and WHEREAS, preparing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) will formally involve the public in any decision about FFTF's future. NOW, 77MREFOPA THE CITY COUNCIL OF TIIE CITY OF PASCO, WASHINGTON, DO RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS. Section 1. That the U. S. Department of Energy Secretary William Richardson be encouraged to order an Environmental Impact Statement for restarting the Fast Flux Test Facility at Hanford. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution shall take effect immediately. PASSED by the City Council of the City of Pasco at its regular meeting dated this 1 t day of March, 1999. 66ries D.
