Tuesday March 9, 2010
The meeting was called to order at 10:05 a.m. by Chairperson Ron Van
Nostrand.
Members present: Margaret Moore, Richard Brandt, Ron Van Nostrand, Linda
Hendrickson-Patrick and Katie Barton
Tom Larsen was present representing the Pasco City Council.
Staff Present: Vince Guerrero and Marie Schiefelbein.
The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.
Minutes of the February 9, 2010 meeting were approved as written.
Vince Guerrero covered the ALTC program updates for January 2010.
Vince Guerrero covered the Senior Center Highlights and upcoming events
for January and February, 2010 including:
❖ Dental Hygiene services continue to be offered at the Pasco Senior
Center on the second Monday of each month. Services are performed
by Marie McElderry, RDH, BS of Oral Health Care. These services are
performed at a reduced rate for anyone over the age of 60. For more
information or to make an appointment call 420-0884.
❖ A financial Advisory Hour and Dessert Social was held on February
10th from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon.
❖ Another session of AARP Driver Safety was held February 10th & 1 itn
with twenty-three people in attendance.
❖ A Valentines dance sponsored by the Pasco Senior Citizen's Association
took place on February 10th from 7:30 - 10:30 p.m. Forty-seven
people attended.
❖ The Pasco High School Key Club sponsored a FREE Valentines Ball on
Saturday, February 13th from 7:30 - 10:30 p.m. Eighty-one people
attended.
❖ A new session of Yoga begins February 16 and runs until March 25tH
❖ Aging and Long Term Care held a Care Provider training here at the
Pasco Senior Center on Tuesday, February 16, 2010. Approximately
140 people attended.
❖ A Seniors Reverse Mortgage seminar took place February 17th. Four
people attended.
❖ A new session of Sewing with Marcy began February 22nd and will run
until May 24th. Cost is $26 for City of Pasco residents and $31 for non-
residents.
❖ New sessions of Enhance Fitness and Senior Stretch and Tone began
March 1st.
❖ FREE AARP Tax Aide continues to be offered on Mondays from 9:00
a.m. - 12:00 noon until April 12th. No appointment is necessary (first-
come-first-served).
❖ Two representatives from the Kennewick Social Security office were at
the Pasco Senior Center on Wednesday, March 3rd to talk to people
about the Changes in laws that make it easier than ever to save on
Medicare drug plans.
❖ Another Financial Advisory Hour and Dessert Social will be held
Thursday, March 11th from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon. There is no
charge to speak with an advisor and no appointment is necessary. No
products or services will be advertised or sold during this time.
❖ Another AARP Driver Safety class will be held March 10th & 11th from
9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Cost is $12 for AARP members (proof of
membership must be supplied) and $14 for non-members.
❖ A St. Patrick's Dance will be held Wednesday, March 11th from 7:30 -
10:30 p.m. Cost is $5 per person.
❖ Anyone interested in learning to play Mahjong (a Chinese game of
skill, strategy and calculation) can stop by the Pasco Senior Center on
Thursdays beginning March 11th from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. There is no
charge for this activity.
❖ Audiologists from Columbia Basin Hearing and Balance Center continue
to offer FREE hearing screenings on the third Tuesday of each month
from 11 :30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.at the Pasco Senior Center. An
appointment is required and can be made by calling 545-3459. In
addition to a hearing screening, the Audiologists will also clean your
hearing aid and provide performance check-ups on hearing aids.
Hearing aide batteries are also available at a discounted price.
❖ A class entitled "Get a Website Quick, Cheap and Easy" is scheduled
for Wednesday, March 17th from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. Cost is $47 for City
of Pasco residents and $49 for non-residents. This class is a Power
Point presentation. Students do not need to bring computers.
❖ Seattle Mariners Home Opener: Don't miss one of the most exciting
games of the season at Safeco Field as the Mariners take on the
Oakland Athletics. Experience all of the excitement and special pre-
game festivities that only happen on opening day! We will travel by
motorcoach to Seattle where we will be dropped off right at Safeco
Field; no waiting in line or paying to park and you don't even have to
do the driving. Just sit back, relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery of
Snoqualmie Pass. Tickets are on the 100 level! We will be stopping
for dinner on the way home (not included in the ticket price). This trip
is sure to fill fast as opening day always sells out, so register early!

$84 for City of Pasco residents and $89 for non-residents (fee includes
transportation and tickets to the game). Registration deadline:
March 12, 2010. Ages: Adult.
❖ The City of Pasco's Volunteer Appreciation Reception will be held April
22nd from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. at the Pasco Senior Center. City staff is
currently working on gathering names and address so that invitations
can be ordered and sent out. We will also be taking photos of City
volunteers to be used in a slide show that will be shown during the
reception.
❖ Seattle Sounders Football Club - Come watch the Seattle Sounders
FC take on the Houston Dynamo. The Sounders FC (Football Club) is
the new expansion team added to Major League Soccer (MLS). 2009
Boasted an impressive first season as the Sounders won the US Open
Cup which allows them to participate in the 2010-2011 CONCACAF
Champions League. This will be one of the most exciting events you
will ever attend where fans are fanatics and sitting is not an option, if
you want to see the game. The Sounders sell out every game so
tickets are a hard to come by! Sign up soon, you don't want to miss
this trip!

Ages: 5 - 17 and Adults - Children 17 and under must be
accompanied by an Adult.
Fee: $74 Resident / $89 Non-Resident
Registration Deadline: Tuesday June 29th
Fees Include: Ticket, Transportation and Parking (No meals will be
provided)
❖ The 2010 All-Senior-Picnic will be held Thursday September 23rd at
TRAC in Pasco (this year's host city). City staff members are currently
working on putting this event together. More information will be
available as the summer draws closer.
Old Business
❖ Vince provided and update on the Senior Picnic.
New Business
❖ A discussion regarding the City pools and the proposed water park for
Pasco took place. Vince stated that the City of Pasco is currently
remodeling Memorial Pool and it will be open for this summer's swim
season. Tom Larsen stated that the City of Pasco has approved plans
for a privately owned water park that will be built in Pasco.
❖ Margaret Moore attended and ALTC meeting and she stated that they
are very happy that they will sustain fewer budget cuts than originally
planned.
❖ Katie Barton will not be reapplying for the Senior Citizen's Advisory
Board so today's meeting is her last.
With no further business the meeting was adjourned at 10:25 am. The
next meeting will be held Tuesday April 13 2010 at 10:00 am.
Chairperson will be Margaret Moore.
