Tuesday February 10, 2009
The meeting was called to order at 10:00 a.m. by Chairperson John Evans
Members Present: Katie Barton, John Evans and Ron Van Nostrand and Linda
Hendrickson-Patrick
Tom Larsen was present representing the Pasco City Council.
Staff Present: Paul Whitemarsh, Vince Guerrero and Marie Schiefelbein.
The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.
Minutes of the January 13, 2009 meeting were approved as written.
Vince Guerrero covered the ALTC program updates for January 2009.
Vince Guerrero covered the Senior Center Highlights and upcoming events for
January and February, 2009, including:
❖ Marcy Fink was here on January 12th with a group of volunteers to sew
pillows for the troop serving overseas.
❖ A financial advisory hour and dessert social took place January 22 nd
❖ AARP Tax Aide began on February 2 n and will continue at the Pasco Senior
Center until April 13tH. Volunteers are available on Mondays from 9:00 a.m.
to 12:00 noon to help you prepare your 2008 tax return. No appointment is
necessary. A list of the information and items you must bring with you is
available at the front desk.
❖ New session of Enhance Fitness and Senior Stretch and Tone began
February 2 nd
❖ An AARP Driver Safety Class was held February 4 & 5 with twenty-four
people attending.
❖ A new session of Drawing with Jerre Raven began on February 4th and will
run until March 25tH
❖ Marcy Fink will be at the Senior Center on Monday, February 9, 2009 at
10:00 a.m. to sew pillows that will be sent to our troops serving overseas.
You are invited to help with this important project. No sewing experience is
necessary.
❖ A Valentines Dinner and Dance is scheduled for Wednesday, February 11tH
Dinner begins at 5:30 p.m. with dancing to follow at 7:30 p.m. Dinner
tickets are required and may be purchased at the front desk of the Pasco
Senior Center during regular business hours or at the Wednesday night
dances. Sweet and Sour Chicken, Au Gratin Potatoes, veggies, salad and
dessert will be served. Cost is $5.00 per person.
❖ The Pasco Senior Center will be closed on Monday, February 16th in honor of
President's Day.
❖ A Financial Advisory Hour and Dessert Social will take place Thursday,
January 22nd from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
❖ New sessions of Enhance Fitness and Easy Does It Stretch & Tone began
March 2, 2009
❖ The Pasco High School Key Club will once again host a FREE Sweethearts
Prom for senior citizens on Saturday, February 14th from 7:30 - 10:30 p.m.
Enjoy live music from the Columbia River Dance band, entertainment and
refreshments.
❖ A new session of Yoga begins February 17th and runs until March 26th. Cost
is $30 for City of Pasco residents and $35 for non-residents.
❖ A new session of Sewing with Marcy begins February 23rd and runs until May
18th (this is an extended winter and spring session for the price of a regular
session).Classes meet on Mondays from 12:30 - 3:30 p.m. Cost is $25.50
for City of Pasco residents and $27.50 for non-residents. Space is limited so
register early by calling Marcy at 545-8285.
❖ Another AARP Driver Safety class will be held March 11 and 12. Cost is
$12.00 for AARP members (proof of membership required) and $14.00 for
non-member. Register at the Pasco Senior Center front desk during regular
business hours or call 545-3459.
❖ The Best of Broadway presents: Ain't Misbehaving
Date: Thursday, March 19, 2009
Time: 1:30 p.m. - 12:30 a.m. (March 20, 2009)
Location: Spokane Opera House
Ages: Adult
Cost: 104*/$114 (Orchestra)
The registration deadline for this trip is February 19, 2009. *City of Pasco
residents pay the discounted price. You may register in person at the Pasco
Recreation Services office (525 S. 3rd), the Pasco Senior Center (1315 N. 7th
Ave.) or on line at www.pasco-wa.gov. A larger bus has been secured so
we are able to take more people for this trip. We will continue to register
until we are full.
❖ The Trip to Seattle to watch the Mariners play their home opener has been
canceled due to lack of interest.
❖ An April Brunch will be held on 4/6/09 beginning at 10:00 a.m. Tickets are
required and may be purchased for $4.00 each until Thursday, April 2nd.
❖ Adult Golf lessons will be offered at Sun Willows during the months of
April, May and June. Please inquire at the front desk or on line for a schedule
of these lessons.
❖ An Open House Lunch and Entertainment is planned for May 4th. The open
house takes place from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Lunch is at noon. There is
no charge for the open house however tickets are required for the lunch and
must be purchased in advance. Cost is just $4.00.
❖ The Pasco Senior Center will once again hold a parking lot BBQ complete with
burgers, hotdogs and all the fixings. This will take place Monday, June 1,
2009 at 12:00 noon. Cost is $4.00 per person. Tickets must be purchased
by Thursday, May 28, 2009.
Old Business
❖ The Advisory Committee would like an update on the Senior Center study
that was completed in 2007. Vince stated that no decisions regarding the
study have been made.
Linda Hendrickson-Patrick reminded the Advisory Committee that one of the
most important ideas that came out the study was that the Senior Center
needs to update its decor to make it a more warm and inviting place to visit.
New Business
❖ The Washington State Association of Senior Centers (WSACS) will hold its
annual conference in Pasco in May.
❖ A trip to explore the Columbia Gorge is being planned for this summer. The
trip should cost less than $100.
❖ The Tri-City Herald has canceled their Prime Life section for seniors that was
being published on the second Tuesday of each month. This is where the
Pasco Senior Center's public service announcements were being printed. We
will still be able to submit public service announcements but they are unsure
of what section of the paper they will be put into or when they may be
printed. We will also not be able to submit as many items as we were.
With no further business the meeting was adjourned at 10:40 am. The next
meeting will be held Tuesday February 10, 2009 at 10:00 am. Chairperson will
be Katie Barton.
