HomeMy WebLinkAbout06-09-2009 Senior Center Advisory Committee Minutes City of Pasco Senior Citizen's Advisory Committee Tuesday June 9, 2009 The meeting was called to order at 10:00 a.m. by Chairperson Margaret Moore. Members Present: Katie Barton, Margaret Moore and Ron Van Nostrand. Members absent: Dick Brandt (vacation) and Linda Hendrickson-Patrick. Tom Larsen was present representing the Pasco City Council. Staff Present: Carleen Hanscom, Vince Guerrero and Marie Schiefelbein. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Minutes of the May 12, 2009 meeting were approved as written. Vince Guerrero covered the ALTC program updates for May 2009. Vince Guerrero covered the Senior Center Highlights and upcoming events for May and June, 2009 including: ❖ A new session of Yoga began on May 12th. It will run until June 18'h and then the instructor will be taking the remainder of the summer off. She will begin classes again in the fall. ❖ New sessions of Enhance Fitness and Easy Does it Stretch and Tone began on June 1St ❖ Another AARP Driver Safety Course was held June 3rd & 4th. Ten people were in attendance. This is the last class until September. ❖ Drawing with Jerre Raven began a new session on May 27th. It will run until July 15th ❖ A Financial Advisory Hour and Dessert Social took place on May 28tH ❖ A parking lot BBQ took place on Monday, June 1St. Approximately 70 people participated, including several members of Ye Old Car Club who brought their vintage cars to the event. ❖ A summer session of Sewing with Marcy begins June 15th and runs until July 20th. Cost is $25.50 for City of Pasco residents and $27.50 for non-residents. ❖ A financial advisory hour and dessert social will take place Thursday, July 25th. ❖ A FREE Saturday afternoon movie will be shown at the Pasco Senior Center on June 27th beginning at 2:00 p.m. This is a family friendly event with refreshments being served. All children must be accompanied by an adult. A Spanish language tH movie will be shown on July 25 ❖ Pasco's Grand Old 4th of July Celebration takes place July 3rd & 4th with a wide variety of activities for all ages including a community BBQ with live 50's and 60's music; A free outdoor movie (American Graffiti); A pancake breakfast in Memorial Park; The Grand Old 4th Parade; Car show; Fireworks and much more. For more information visit .www.arandold4th.com. ❖ An Open House and Luncheon will take place on Monday, August 3rd. There is no charge to attend the Open House however a ticket is required for the luncheon. Tickets are available for $4.00 per person at the front desk. ❖ Two Best of Broadway shows are currently being offered. The first is Disney's The Lion King. This trip takes place Thursday November 12th however, tickets must be purchased by June 15th. Cost is $129 for City of Pasco residents and $139 for non residents (Orchestra seating, rows A - J). This fee includes transportation to Spokane, dinner (and gratuity) at Anthony's Homeport Restaurant before the production and the Broadway tickets. The second Best of Broadway show being offered is Fiddler on the Roof featuring the star of the original motion picture, Chaim Topol in his farewell performance. This trip takes place Thursday, September 3rd. Cost is $114 for City of Pasco residents and $124 for non-residents (Orchestra seating, rows H- N). Tickets must be purchased by July 31St. This fee includes transportation to Spokane, dinner (and gratuity) at Anthony's Homeport Restaurant and Broadway tickets. ❖ Tour the Columbia Gorge. This trip is being planned for Friday, August 21St. You will enjoy several great stops during the day including Stonehenge, Maryhill Winery, Maryhill Museum, and finally a relaxing excursion on the Mt. Hood Railroad. You will also enjoy a wonderful boxed lunch prepared by the Maryhill staff. Finally we will be stopping at the Riverside Grill in Hood River for dinner (not included in the ticket price). Trip fee includes Stonehenge, winery, museum and railroad excursion. Cost is $92 for City of Pasco Residents and $99 for non- residents. Adults ages 21 and over only please. Registration deadline is Friday, July 17tH ❖ Seattle Mariners vs. Chicago White Sox - This exciting game takes place Thursday, September 17th. We will depart from Pasco City Hall at 9:45 a.m. and return at approximately 11:45 p.m. Cost is $59 for City of Pasco residents and $69 for non- residents. Registration deadline is Friday, August 14tH ❖ The 16th Annual All Senior Picnic will be held at Keewaydin Park in Kennewick (next to the Kennewick Senior Center) on Thursday, September 17th from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Buttons will be on Sale by August 1St and can be purchased for $5.00 each at the Kennewick and Pasco Senior Centers or at the Richland Community Center. Old Business ❖ Margaret Moore reported that she visited with one of the ALTC caseworkers to discuss the services they provide at the Pasco Senior Center. ❖ Margaret Moore would like additional information on the open house being held in August. Vince explained that we will have our fitness instructor and our nursing staff on hand to discuss their programs. In additions, Vince will be available to answer questions regarding programming and activities at the Pasco Senior Center. ❖ Aging and Long Term care will be starting a new schedule at the Pasco Senior Center in the very near future. A caseworker from ALTC will be available on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. At this time, two caseworkers are planning to share this responsibility. Both are bi-lingual (English and Spanish). New Business ❖ We have received word that Senior Life Resources has discontinued the Foot Care program that served Benton County and some Franklin County clients. This will leave approximately 3000 people without foot care service. At this time, there are no plans for the Franklin County program to expand into Benton County. ❖ Katie Barton would like the Senior Citizen's Advisory Committee to be put back into the Recreation brochure. Vince explained that in order to do this, we will need to exclude some of our activities as we have very little space available in the brochure. With no further business the meeting was adjourned at 10:35 am. The next meeting will be held Tuesday July 14, 2009 at 10:00 am. Chairperson will be Katie Barton.
