HomeMy WebLinkAbout09-08-2009 Senior Center Advisory Committee Minutes City of Pasco Senior Citizen's Advisory Committee Tuesday September 8, 2009 The meeting was called to order at 10:05 a.m. by Chairperson Richard Brandt.. Members Present: Katie Barton, Margaret Moore, Ron Van Nostrand, Richard Brandt and Linda Hendrickson-Patrick. Tom Larsen was present representing the Pasco City Council. Staff Present: Marie Schiefelbein. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Minutes of the July 14, 2009 meeting were approved as written. Marie Schiefelbein covered the ALTC program updates for July and August 2009. Marie Schiefelbein covered the Senior Center Highlights and upcoming events for August and September, 2009 including: ❖ New sessions of Enhance Fitness and Easy Does it Stretch and Tone began on September 2nd. ❖ Drawing with Jerre Raven began a new session on July 22nd. This class runs until September 9th ❖ A Financial Advisory Hour and Dessert Socials took place on July 29th and August 27th ❖ A free Saturday afternoon family friendly movie was shown on July 25th. There were no attendees. ❖ An Open House and Luncheon took place on Monday, August 3 rd ❖ The "Tour the Columbia Gorge" Trip offered August 21St was canceled due to lack of participation. ❖ S.H.A.K.E. - Seniors Helping All Kids' Education has once again placed a box at the Pasco Senior Center to accept donations of new and/or gently used school supplies that will be distributed to children in our community for the upcoming school year. Thanks to all who donated supplies. ❖ A Western dance will take place on Wednesday, August 26th from 7:30 - 10:30 p.m. with live music provided by the Columbia River Dance Band. Cost is $5 person. ❖ The AAPR Driver Safety Class being offered September 9 & 10 was canceled due to lack of participation. ❖ Seattle Mariners vs. Chicago White Sox - This trip was canceled due to lack of participation ❖ A FREE presentation entitled "Stress Management for Seniors" will be offered September 15th at 10:30 a.m. at the Pasco Senior Center. Presenter is Jerry Swinnerton, a licensed mental health counselor and social worker. ❖ Dental Hygiene services will be offered at the Pasco Senior Center on September 21, October 19, November 23 and December 21. Services are performed by Marie McElderry, RDH, BS of Oral Health Care. These services are performed at a reduced rate for anyone over the age of 60. For more information or to make an appointment call 420-0884. ❖ The 16th Annual All Senior Picnic will be held at Keewaydin Park in Kennewick (next to the Kennewick Senior Center) on Thursday, September 17th from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Buttons are now on Sale and can be purchased for $5.00 each at the Kennewick and Pasco Senior Centers or at the Richland Community Center. ❖ The Benton Franklin Health Department will be conducting a Flu shot clinic at the Pasco Senior Center on Tuesday, September 22nd from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Pneumonia shots will also be available at this time. Prices for the 2009 vaccinations have not yet been established. ❖ A Chili Feed is planned for Monday, October 5th from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. Tickets are required and may be purchased for $4 per person at the Pasco Senior Center. Tickets are available until 5:00 p.m. on October 1, 2009. ❖ Another AARP Driver Safety class will be offered October 14 & 15. Cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members (proof of membership required) ❖ Sewing with Marcy will begin its fall session on September 21St with classes continuing until December 14th. Classes are held on Mondays from 12:30 - 3:30 p.m. Sewers of all levels are welcomed. Cost is $25.50 for City of Pasco residents and $27.50 for non-residents. ❖ Best of Broadway presents Disney's The Lion King. This trip takes place Thursday November 12th. Cost is $129 for City of Pasco residents and $139 for non residents (Orchestra seating, rows A - J). This fee includes transportation to Spokane, dinner (and gratuity) at Anthony's Homeport Restaurant before the production and the Broadway tickets. Registration deadline is October Stn ❖ Another Kayak Tour and Dinner at Anthony's will be held on Friday, September 18th. Paddle downstream from Leslie Groves Park to Columbia Point Park where we will dock our Kayaks and enjoy a wonderful 4-course dinner at Anthony's Home Port Restaurant. Directions and detailed itineraries will be given upon registration. Trip fee includes kayak, shuttle, equipment, guides and dinner. Time: 1:30 - 6:00 p.m. Cost: $49* / $54 Ages: Adults 18 years and over Registration Deadline: Monday, September 14, 2009 ❖ A Hawaiian dance will be held Wednesday, September 23rd from 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. Cost is $5.00 per person. Refreshments will be served. Live music is provided by the Columbia Basin Dance Band. ❖ A Pendleton Underground Tour and dinner is being offered Wednesday, October 14th from 11 :00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. Cost is $99 for city of Pasco residents and $109 for non-residents. ❖ A Halloween party for children ages 12 and under will be held at the Pasco Senior Center on Thursday, October 29th from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. Activities will include Games, a costume and coloring contest. Prizes will be awarded and refreshments will be served. ALL CHILDREN MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY AN ADULT. If you would like to attend with your children, grand children or great grand children please RSVP to 545-3459 by Monday, October 26th Old Business There was no old business discussed. New Business ❖ Margaret Moore told the Committee about the ALTC funding meeting she attended on August 19th. She stated that it was recommended the Health Screening program be terminated and that funds from that program be transferred to the Foot Care program. ❖ Katie Barton discussed the HUD grant dollars that the City of Pasco will receive. She stated that there will be a meeting on September 17th for the general public to either support proposed use of this money or to make suggestions for its use. With no further business the meeting was adjourned at 10:45 am. The next meeting will be held Tuesday October 13, 2009 at 10:00 am. Chairperson will be Ron Van Nostrand.
