HomeMy WebLinkAbout11-10-2009 Senior Center Advisory Committee Minutes City of Pasco Senior Citizen's Advisory Committee Tuesday November 10, 2009 The meeting was called to order at 10:03 a.m. by Chairperson Margaret Moore. Members present: Katie Barton, Margaret Moore, Ron VanNostrand and Richard Brandt. Members absent: Linda Hendrickson-Patrick. Tom Larsen was present representing the Pasco City Council. Staff Present: Carleen Hanscom and Marie Schiefelbein. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Minutes of the October 13, 2009 meeting were approved as written. Marie Schiefelbein covered the ALTC program updates for October 2009. Marie Schiefelbein covered the Senior Center Highlights and upcoming events for October and November, 2009 including: ❖ Mexican Train Dominoes began on October 8th. We have had a good turnout for this activity. Play takes place on Thursdays from 1 :00 - 3:00 p.m. There is no charge to play. ❖ A free reverse mortgage workshop was held on October 16tH. Seven people attended. ❖ Discount dental hygiene services were offered at the Pasco Senior Center on October 19tH ❖ The Co-Ed Step Aerobics class began a new session on October 26tH This session will run until December 16tH ❖ A Financial Advisory Hour and Dessert Social was held on October 28th ❖ A Halloween Dance took place on October 28th with forty-two people attending. ❖ Two Halloween parties took place at the Pasco Senior Center. The first, sponsored by the City of Pasco, was held on October 29th. This party was for children 12 and under and their parents, grandparents and great grandparents. Approximately 85 people attended. The second was a party sponsored by the ARC of the Tri-Cities on October 30th. Approximately 150 people attended. ❖ "New sessions of Enhance Fitness and Stretch and Tone began on November2nd. ❖ The fall luncheon scheduled for November 2nd was canceled due to lack of participation. ❖ The Pasco Senior Center teamed up with the Pasco Fire department to replace batteries in the smoke detectors of senior citizens living in the Pasco city limits. The free 9-volt batteries as well as the labor were provided by the Pasco Fire department. Services were offered November 2 - 6 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Forty people signed up for this service. ❖ The AAPR Driver Safety class scheduled for November 4 & 5 was canceled. The instructor did not received class supplies from AARP. ❖ Holiday closures: November 11 - Veteran's Day; November 26 & 27 - Thanksgiving; December 25 - Christmas; January 1, 2010 - New Years day. ❖ A Veteran's Honors Dance will be held November 11 from 7:30 - 10:30 p.m. Veterans are encouraged to wear any or all of their military uniforms. Live music provided by the Columbia River Dance Band. Cost is $5 per person. ❖ The November and December birthday potlucks will be held one week earlier than usual (November 20 and December 18) due to the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. ❖ The annual Breakfast with Santa will take place Saturday, December 12 from 8:30 - 10:30 a.m. Cost is $3 per person. This event is open to all ages. Children will have an opportunity to visit with Santa and photos will be provided by Alejandro De La Pena. Breakfast will consist of all-you-can-eat pancakes, ham, coffee, juice and hot chocolate. Tickets are required and can be purchased at the Pasco Senior Center front desk or the Pasco Recreation Services office during regular business hours. ❖ Several Medicare & supplement plans workshops are being offered at the Pasco Senior Center during the month of November. The first, hosted by 3 Rivers Financial Group and Simply Benefits, takes place on November 10th at 10:00 a.m. Group Health will host "Your Life, Your Medicare Questions Answered" on Tuesday, November 10th at 2:00 p.m. and Thursday, December 17th at 10:00 a.m. SHIBA (Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors) will be at the Pasco Senior Center on Tuesdays, November 17th to December 22nd to help you sort through the Medicare maze. ❖ A new session of Yoga begins November 17 and runs until December 24th (no class 11/26). Cost is $30 for city of Pasco residents and $35 for non-residents. ❖ Another session of Drawing with Jerre Raven begins November 18th Classes take place Wednesdays from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Cost is $43.00 for City of Pasco residents and $45.50 for non-residents. To register please see the class instructor. ❖ A financial advisory hour and dessert social will take place Thursday, November 19th from 11 :00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. ❖ Join Jerry Swinnerton, a licensed mental health counselor and Social Worker for a presentation entitled "Stress Management for Seniors". The presentation takes place Tuesday, December 1St at 10:30 a.m. at the Pasco Senior Center. If you'd like to attend please RSVP to 545- 3459. This is a FREE presentation. ❖ New sessions of Enhance Fitness and Senior Stretch and Tone begin December 2"d ❖ A semi-formal Christmas dance will take place on December 16 from 7:30 - 10:30 p.m. Live holiday music as well as your favorite dance tunes from the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s will be played by the Columbia River Dance Band in our beautifully decorated dance hall. Dress in your holiday best and join us. Cost is $5 per person. ❖ Dental Hygiene services will be offered at the Pasco Senior Center on December 21. Services are performed by Marie McElderry, RDH, BS of Oral Health Care. These services are performed at a reduced rate for anyone over the age of 60. For more information or to make an appointment call 420-0884. ❖ Another AARP Driver Safety class will be offered December 9 & 10. Cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members (proof of membership required). ❖ The annual Yokes Holiday Dinner will take place Thursday, December 10th from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. This event is geared toward senior citizens and their families and is FREE! An RSVP is required. The Pasco Senior Center will begin taking RSVPs on Monday November 16th. This is a very popular event and will fill quickly so call early! Once filled, a wait list will be established to fill any cancelations received. ❖ The annual New Year's Eve Ball will take place Thursday, December 31 from 8:30 p.m. - 12:30 a.m. This is our largest dance of the year! Live music, great refreshments and beautiful surroundings are just a part of this magical evening. Cost is $10 per person. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Pasco Senior Center front desk during regular business hours or during the Wednesday night dances. Tickets will also be available at the door. ❖ U.S. Championship Figure Skating Exhibition: Travel to the Spokane Arena to see the best that the U.S. has to offer in the world of Figure Skating. Come see the athletes that will be representing our county in the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, Canada. Of course our journey wouldn't be complete without dinner at Anthony's Homeport Restaurant where we'll enjoy a delicious 4-course meal while overlooking the Spokane Falls. Transportation will be by motorcoach. Date: Sunday, January 24, 2010. Time: 9:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. Fee: $149 for City of Pasco residents and $159 for non- residents (fee includes transportation, tickets to the exhibition, dinner and gratuity). Registration deadline: Sunday, December 17, 2009. Age: Adults. ❖ The Best of Broadway Presents AVENUE Q: This is the story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college grad who comes to New York City with big dreams and a tiny bank account. He soon discovers that the only neighborhood in his price range is Avenue Q; still, the neighbors seem nice. Together, Princeton and his newfound friends struggle to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life. Avenue Q features a cast of people and puppets who tell the story in a smart, risque and downright entertaining way. We'll travel to Spokane via motorcoach and enjoy a delicious dinner at Anthony's Homeport Restaurant before enjoying the production of AVENUE Q. Date: Thursday, February 11, 2010. Time: 1:00 p.m. - 12:30 a.m. Fee: $124 for City of Pasco residents and $134 for non-residents (fee includes transportation, dinner and gratuity and tickets to the production). Location: Spokane Opera House. Registration deadline: January 8, 2010. Age: Adults. *This production contains adult humor* ❖ Seattle Mariners Home Opener: Don't miss one of the most exciting games of the season at Safeco Field as the Mariners take on the Oakland Athletics. Experience all of the excitement and special pre- game festivities that only happen on opening day! We will travel by motorcoach to Seattle where we will be dropped off right at Safeco Field; no waiting in line or paying to park and you don't even have to do the driving. Just sit back, relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Snoqualmie Pass. Tickets are on the 100 level! We will be stopping for dinner on the way home (not included in the ticket price). This trip is sure to fill fast as opening day always sells out, so register early! Date: Monday, April 12, 2010. Time: 10:00 a.m. - 11 :30 p.m. Fee: $84 for City of Pasco residents and $89 for non-residents (fee includes transportation and tickets to the game). Registration deadline: March 12, 2010. Ages: Adult. Old Business ❖ The Health Screening program was terminated as of November 1, 2009. The money left over in that program has been transferred to the Foot Care program ($3000.00). New Business ❖ Carleen discussed floor refinishing at the Pasco Senior Center. At this time we will not be refinishing the floors in 2009 due to budget constraints. The City will be looking at the 2010 budget to determine if the floors can be refinished sometime in the next few months. ❖ The City has purchased a new fax machine for the Senior Center. The one that has been used for the last 10 years belonged to Aging and Long Term Care and would no longer accept incoming faxes. With no further business the meeting was adjourned at 10:35 am. The next meeting will be held Tuesday December 8, 2009 at 10:00 am. Chairperson will be Katie Barton.
