Tuesday December 8, 2009
The meeting was called to order at 10:05 a.m. by Chairperson Katie Barton
Members present: Katie Barton, Margaret Moore, Ron Van Nostrand Linda
Hendrickson-Patrick and Richard Brandt.
Tom Larsen was present representing the Pasco City Council.
Staff Present: Carleen Hanscom, Vince Guerrero and Marie Schiefelbein.
The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.
Minutes of the November 10, 2009 meeting were approved with a correction
to the Yokes Holiday dinner.
Vince Guerrero covered the ALTC program updates for November 2009.
Linda Hendrickson-Patrick would like to know if any of our programs will be
affected by the economic climate. Vince explained that the Health Screening
program has been terminated. Almost all of the money for that program has
been put into the Foot Care program for 2010.
Margaret Moore explained that ALTC is trying not to cut any programs
completely so that they can be picked up and expanded as additional dollars
become available.
Vince explained that Meals on Wheels got a financial boost from stimulus
money so that they will be able to provide more meals in 2010.
Vince Guerrero covered the Senior Center Highlights and upcoming events
for November and December, 2009 including:
❖ Holiday closures: December 25 - Christmas; January 1, 2010 - New
Years day.
❖ Several Medicare & supplement plans workshops were offered at the
Pasco Senior Center during the month of November. The first, hosted
by 3 Rivers Financial Group and Simply Benefits, took place on
November 10th at 10:00 a.m. Group Health hosted "Your Life, Your
Medicare Questions Answered" on Tuesday, November 10th at 2:00
p.m. SHIBA (Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors) was at
the Pasco Senior Center on November 17th, 24th and December 1St to
help individuals sort through the Medicare maze.
❖ A Veteran's Honors Dance was held November 11 from 7:30 - 10:30
p.m. Forty people attended.
❖ A new session of Yoga began November 17 and runs until December
24th. Cost is $30 for city of Pasco residents and $35 for non-residents
❖ The November Birthday Potluck was canceled.
❖ Another session of Drawing with Jerre Raven began November 18th and
runs until January 13, 2010. Classes take place Wednesdays from
11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Cost is $43.00 for City of Pasco residents and
$45.50 for non-residents. To register please see the class instructor.
❖ A financial advisory hour and dessert social took place Thursday,
November 19th from 11 :00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
❖ Jerry Swinnerton, a licensed mental health counselor was at the Pasco
Senior Center on December 1St at 10:30 a.m. to present "Stress
Management for Seniors".
❖ New sessions of Enhance Fitness and Senior Stretch and Tone began
December 2"d
Upcoming Events
❖ The annual Yokes Holiday Dinner will take place Thursday,
December 10 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. This event is geared toward
senior citizens and their families and is FREE! An RSVP is required.
The Pasco Senior Center will begin taking RSVPs on Monday November
16th. This is a very popular event and will fill quickly so call early!
Once filled, a wait list will be established to fill any cancelations
received.
❖ The annual Breakfast with Santa will take place Saturday, December
12th from 8:30 - 10:30 a.m. Cost is $3 per person. This event is
open to all ages. Children will have an opportunity to visit with Santa
and photos will be provided by Alejandro De La Pena. Breakfast will
consist of all-you-can-eat pancakes, ham, coffee, juice and hot
chocolate. Tickets are required and can be purchased at the Pasco
Senior Center front desk or the Pasco Recreation Services office during
regular business hours.
❖ New sessions of Enhance Fitness and Senior Stretch and Tone begin

❖ SHIBA (Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors) will be at the
Pasco Senior Center on Tuesdays, December 9 - 22 to help individuals
sort through the Medicare maze. An appointment is required and can
be made by calling 582-0631.
❖ A semi-formal Christmas dance will take place on December 16th from
7:30 - 10:30 p.m. Live holiday music as well as your favorite dance
tunes from the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s will be played by the Columbia
River Dance Band in our beautifully decorated dance hall. Dress in
your holiday best and join us. Cost is $5 per person.
❖ The Rolling Hills Chorus of Sweet Adelines International presents
"Christmas Carols & Goodies", a FREE friends and family evening at
the Pasco Senior Center on Thursday December 17th at 6:30 p.m.
❖ Another Financial Advisory Hour and Dessert Social will be held
December 17th from 11 :00 a.m. - 12:00 noon. A volunteer financial
advisor will be available to answer your questions. There is no charge
to speak with this advisor and no appointment is necessary. Clients
will be seen on a first come, first serve basis (or in a small group
depending on the questions asked). No products or services will be
advertised or sold during this time. You will also enjoy an old
fashioned dessert social.
❖ Group Health will host another session of "Your Life, Your Medicare
Questions Answered" on December 17th at 10:00 a.m. If you would
like to attend please RSVP to 1-800-446-8882, ext. 300.
❖ December's Birthday Potluck will be held on the 18th from 6:00 - 8:00
p.m. Please bring a dish to share with others and your place setting
and flatware. An RSVP is appreciated and can be made by calling 545-
3459. This will be the last Birthday Potluck that will be held unless a
volunteer can be found to take over responsibilities.
❖ Dental Hygiene services will be offered at the Pasco Senior Center on
December 21. Services are performed by Marie McElderry, RDH, BS of
Oral Health Care. These services are performed at a reduced rate for
anyone over the age of 60. For more information or to make an
appointment call 420-0884.
❖ Another AARP Driver Safety class will be offered December 9 & 10.
Cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members (proof of
membership required).
❖ The annual New Year's Eve Ball will take place Thursday, December 31
from 8:30 p.m. - 12:30 a.m. This is our largest dance of the year!
Live music, great refreshments and beautiful surroundings are just a
part of this magical evening. Cost is $10 per person. Tickets may be
purchased in advance at the Pasco Senior Center front desk during
regular business hours or during the Wednesday night dances. Tickets
will also be available at the door.
❖ New sessions of Enhance Fitness and Senior Stretch and Tone begin
January 4th. Cost for these classes has risen slightly. Enhance Fitness
will go from $19 and $25 to $23 and $29 depending on residency.
Senior Stretch and Tone goes from $10 and $12 to $13 and $15
depending on residency. This is the first price increases that these
programs have had in six years.
❖ The Questers - a diverse group of people who share common interests
such as the love of antiques, love of learning and the desire to
preserve historical buildings and sites - will conduct a FREE
presentation at the Pasco Senior Center on Tuesday, January 19th at
1:00 p.m. Participants are welcomed to bring their personal antiques
to share with others (no appraisals of antiques will be available).
❖ U.S. Championship Figure Skating Exhibition: Travel to the
Spokane Arena to see the best that the U.S. has to offer in the world
of Figure Skating. Come see athletes that will be representing our
county in the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, Canada. Of
course our journey wouldn't be complete without dinner at Anthony's
Homeport Restaurant where we'll enjoy a delicious 4-course meal
while overlooking the Spokane Falls. Transportation will be by
motorcoach. Date: Sunday, January 24, 2010. Time: 9:00 a.m. -
9:00 p.m. Fee: $149 for City of Pasco residents and $159 for non-
residents (fee includes transportation, tickets to the exhibition, dinner
and gratuity). Registration deadline: Sunday, December 17, 2009.
Age: Adults.
❖ The Best of Broadway Presents AVENUE Q: This is the story of
Princeton, a bright-eyed college grad who comes to New York City with
big dreams and a tiny bank account. He soon discovers that the only
neighborhood in his price range is Avenue Q; still, the neighbors seem
nice. Together, Princeton and his newfound friends struggle to find
jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life. Avenue Q features
a cast of people and puppets who tell the story in a smart, risque and
downright entertaining way. We'll travel to Spokane via motorcoach
and enjoy a delicious dinner at Anthony's Homeport Restaurant before
enjoying the production of AVENUE Q. Date: Thursday, February 11,
2010. Time: 1:00 p.m. - 12:30 a.m. Fee: $124 for City of Pasco
residents and $134 for non-residents (fee includes transportation,
dinner and gratuity and tickets to the production). Location: Spokane
Opera House. Registration deadline: January 8, 2010. Age: Adults.

❖ Seattle Mariners Home Opener: Don't miss one of the most exciting
games of the season at Safeco Field as the Mariners take on the
Oakland Athletics. Experience all of the excitement and special pre-
game festivities that only happen on opening day! We will travel by
motorcoach to Seattle where we will be dropped off right at Safeco
Field; no waiting in line or paying to park and you don't even have to
do the driving. Just sit back, relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery of
Snoqualmie Pass. Tickets are on the 100 level! We will be stopping
for dinner on the way home (not included in the ticket price). This trip
is sure to fill fast as opening day always sells out, so register early!
Date: Monday, April 12, 2010. Time: 10:00 a.m. - 11 :30 p.m. Fee:
$84 for City of Pasco residents and $89 for non-residents (fee includes
transportation and tickets to the game). Registration deadline:
March 12, 2010. Ages: Adult.
Old Business
❖ Linda Hendrickson-Patrick would like to know what happened with the
Senior Center study that was done a few years ago. Carleen stated
that she spoke with the Park Board regarding this issue and they told
her that the study was completed and recommendations were made
however no action or follow-up has taken place on those
recommendations. She will speak with Stan Strebel to see where
things were left and where we need to go from here.
❖ Linda Hendrickson-Patrick would like to know if the computer lab is
used a lot. Vince stated that SHIBA uses it frequently and we have a
few regulars that use it on a daily basis.
New Business
❖ No new business discussed.
With no further business the meeting was adjourned at 10:40 am. The
next meeting will be held Tuesday January 12, 2010 at 10:00 am.
