Tuesday March 11, 2008
The meeting was called to order at 10:05 am by Chairperson Elden
Sargent.
Members Present: Elden Sargent, Katie Barton, Linda Hendrickson-
Patrick, Margaret Moore.
Members absent: John Evans.
Tom Larsen was present representing the Pasco City Council.
Staff Present: Vince Guerrero and Marie Schiefelbein.
Minutes of the February 12, 2008 meeting were read by Vince
Guerrero and approved as written.
Vince Guerrero covered the ALTC program updates as well as Senior
Center Highlights and upcoming events including:
❖ A Valentines dinner and dance was held on February 13th. Sixty-
five people attended the dinner and eighty-three were at the
dance.
❖ AARP Driver Safety Trainings took place February 13 & 14 with
fifteen people attending and again on March 5 & 6 with twenty-
four people attending.
❖ A new adults Yoga class began February 19th and will run until
March 27th. There will be no session in April as the instructor will
be on an extended vacation. The next session will begin May
13th
❖ A Financial Advisory Hour and Ice Cream Social took place
January 24th from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
❖ AARP Tax Aid continues at the Pasco Senior Center. Services are
available on Mondays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and will be
conducted on a first-come-first-serve basis. Volunteers have
been very busy preparing returns for seniors filing to get their
stimulus rebate so please come early and be prepared to wait.
You must bring all of your information for 2007, your 2006
return (if you have one), a photo ID and your social security
card. AARP volunteers can not process your tax return without
your social security card.
❖ February's Birthday Potluck was held on the 22nd with nineteen
people attending. The next potluck will take place March 28tH
An RSVP is required by 3/25. Please bring a dish to share with
others and your place setting.
❖ The Pasco High School Key Club sponsored a free Valentines
dinner and dance for adults and seniors on Saturday, February
23rd. Thirty-three people attended the dinner and sixty-five
were at the dance.
❖ A new session of Sewing with Marcy began February 25th and will
run until May 19th. This is a two-for-the-price-of-one session.
Classes are held on Mondays from 12:30 - 3:30 p.m. There are
several new students in the class.
❖ Charlotte King of Riverton Retirement conducted a presentation
on Retirement Living vs. Assisted Living took place on February
26th with approximately 7 people attending.
❖ A Spring Brunch was held Monday, March 3rd with 42 people
attending.
❖ New sessions of Enhance Fitness and Stretch and Tone began
March 3rd. The next session begins April 2nd
❖ A St. Patrick's Day Dance will be held Wednesday, March 12th
from 7:30 - 10:30 p.m. Cost is $5.00 per person.
❖ A Pinochle Tournament and Potluck will take place on the 2nd
Saturday of each month at the Pasco Senior Center. The potluck
will begin at 11:00 a.m. with pinochle play beginning at 12:00
noon. Cost is $8 for tournament play. This fee covers prizes
awarded.
❖ The next Wildhorse day trip scheduled for March 18th is currently
full. We are taking names for a wait list. There will be another
trip offered on Tuesday, April 8th. Cost is $12 per person. You
will receive a $10 coupon that can be used for food items in the
restaurant, cafe, buffet or lounge.
Linda Beagles from the Manor at Canyon Lakes will be presenting
"Making a Decision on Senior Living. How do I qualify for
reduced rent?" on Tuesday, March 25th at 12:30 p.m.
❖ A new session of Drawing with Jerre Raven will begin on April
2nd Classes are held on Wednesdays from 11 :00 a.m. to 2:00
p.m. Cost is $43 for City of Pasco residents and $45.50 for non-
residents.
❖ An Open House Lunch and Dance will take place Monday, April
7tH The Open House begins at 11:00 a.m. Lunch is from 12:00
noon to 1:00 p.m. and a dance will follow from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.
Cost for the lunch is $4 per person. The Open House and dance
are free. Tickets are required for lunch and must be purchased
by March 28th. Thank you Pacific Crest Planning and the Manor
at Canyon Lakes for co-sponsoring this event.
❖ The Washington State Association of Senior Centers has
obtained tickets for a game between the Seattle Mariners and
the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday, April 15th beginning at 3:40
p.m. Seats are located on the 100 level sections where every
spot has a fantastic view. You must provide your own
transportation to and from the game. Tickets are $33 per
person; $7 less than regular ticket prices. To purchase tickets
contact Vince Guerrero. Last day to purchase tickets is March
12th.
❖ Another Identity Theft presentation will take place Tuesday, April
29th from 10:30 - 11:30 a.m.
❖ Pendleton Underground Tour Comes To Life. This special once a
year event is being offered Saturday, May 17th from 1:00 - 8:30
p.m. Cost is $94 for City of Pasco residents and $99 for non-
residents. Registration deadline is Tuesday, April 1St. You may
register at the Pasco Senior Center, Pasco Recreation Services
office or on line at www.pasco-wa.gov.
❖ A Parking Lot BBQ will be held Monday, June 2nd. More
information will be available in April
❖ A Kayak Tour and Dinner at Anthony's will take place Friday,
June 15th from 1:30 - 6:00 p.m. Cost is $49 for City of Pasco
residents and $54 for non-residents. Registration deadline is
June 11th. Trip fee includes kayak, shuttle, equipment, guides
and dinner. You may register at the Pasco Senior Center, Pasco
Recreation Services office or on line at www.pasco-wa.gov.
❖ The Washington State Association of Senior Centers is offering a
trip to Ireland beginning September 5, 2008. Fee is $3399 per
person double or $3959 per person single. For more information
contact Vince Guerrero at 545-3459.
Old Business
❖ Elden Sargent asked why non-residents are charged more for
some activities. Vince explained that City of Pasco residents pay
a tax to support the Parks and Recreation department therefore
they are given a price break on some activities.
❖ Linda Hendrickson-Patrick asked about the Community Forum
held on February 21St. Katie Barton and Tom Larsen both
attended and gave an overview of items discussed.
❖ The City of Pasco is still reviewing fee schedules for allowing
alcohol during rentals at the Pasco Senior Center. This will likely
go to City Council in April.
❖ Tom Larsen addressed the City's pool and swimming situation.
The City Council discussed fixing the old pools and looked ahead
at future needs including building newer facilities.
New Business
❖ The Connell Foot Care schedule has changed. There will now be
two nurses going to Connell every other month.
❖ Replacement of some window coverings in the center.
With no further business the meeting was adjourned at 10:40 am. The
next meeting will be held Tuesday April 8, 2008 at 10:00 am.
