HomeMy WebLinkAbout08-12-2008 Senior Center Advisory Committee Minutes City of Pasco Senior Citizen's Advisory Committee Tuesday August 12, 2008 The meeting was called to order at 10:00 am by Chairperson Ron Van Nostrand. Members Present: John Evans, Katie Barton, Linda Hendrickson-Patrick and Ron Van Nostrand. Members absent: None. Tom Larsen was present representing the Pasco City Council. Staff Present: Paul Whitemarsh, Vince Guerrero and Marie Schiefelbein. Minutes of the July 8, 2008 meeting were read and approved as written. Vince Guerrero covered the ALTC program updates for the month of July 2008. Vince Guerrero covered the Senior Center Highlights and upcoming events including: ❖ A Red White and Blue dance was held July 2nd. Seventy people attended. ❖ The Taco Feed scheduled for July 7th was canceled. ❖ Marcy Fink was here on July 14th to help sew pillows for the troops. There were approximately eight volunteers helping her. These pillows will be sent to our troops serving overseas. ❖ A Wildhorse day trip took place Tuesday, July 15th. Sixteen people attended. ❖ A Financial Advisory Hour and Pie Social took place on July 31st. Attendance numbers are not available. ❖ Ballroom and Latin Dance lessons continue to be offered on Wednesday afternoons. Classes are as follows: 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. - Teens and Adults 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. - Children Beginners 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. - Teens & Adults Cost is $25.00 per person each month. To register call 545-3459. ❖ July's Birthday Potluck was held on the 25th. Attendance numbers are not yet available. ❖ The S.H.A.K.E. program (Seniors Helping All Kids Education) is collecting school supplies for those students who can not afford to purchase their own. A drop box has been placed near the front desk of the Pasco Senior Center. There is also a list of needed supplies just above the box. If you can help, please drop your donations into the box. V. Upcoming Events ❖ A new session of Enhance Fitness will begin August 1st. This class meets on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. ❖ A new session of Senior Stretch and Tone will begin August 4th. Class meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 11: 15 a.m. to 12:00 noon. ❖ A new session of Yoga begins on August 5th and runs until September 11th. The class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Pasco Senior Center from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. ❖ A Wild Wild West Dinner and Dance will take place Monday, August 4th from 6:00 - 10:00 p.m. Tickets for dinner are required and must be purchased by July 31st. Dinner is from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. followed by a free dance from 7:00 - 10:00 p.m. Live music will be provided by Big Daddy & The Nightcrawlers. This event is sponsored by Parkview Estates, Sterling Insurance and the Pasco Senior Center. ❖ Marie McElderry, RDH, BS (Registered Dental Hygienist) of Oral Health Care LLC will be providing affordable preventative services at reduced rates for anyone over the age of 60. These services will be conducted at the Pasco Senior Center on the first Thursday of each month from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. Services include Dental Hygiene Evaluation, Routine Dental Cleaning, Therapeutic Dental Cleanings, Denture Evaluations and Cleanings, Fluoride Application, and Desensitizing Teeth. Medicaid and Insurance is billed for services if applicable. ❖ A Wildhorse Day Trip is planned for August 12th from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Cost is $12 per person. Please register at the Pasco Senior Center. ❖ Marcy Fink will be at the Pasco Senior Center on August 11th from 12:00 - 4:00 p.m. to sew pillows that will be sent to troops serving overseas. If you would like to help, stop by on the 11th. No sewing experience is necessary. ❖ Kayak the Hanford Reach. This trip is being offered on Saturday, August 23rd. Cost is $59 for city of Pasco residents and $64 for non- residents. We will paddle from the Vernita Bridge through White Bluffs and the old ferry landing. This trip includes transportation, guides, shuttle and Kayaks. Please bring a lunch/snacks, sunscreen and water. We will be departing from Pasco City Hall at 9:00 a.m. and returning at approximately 5:00 p.m. ❖ A Financial Advisory Hour and Ice Cream Social will take place Thursday, August 28th from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon. There is no charge to speak with an advisor and no appointment is necessary. No products or services will be advertised or sold during this time. ❖ An AARP Driver Safety class will be held on September 3rd & 4th from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Cost is $10 per person. Please register at the front desk or by calling 545-3459. ❖ The Washington State Association of Senior Centers is offering a trip to Ireland beginning September 5, 2008. Fee is $3399 per person double or $3959 per person single. For more information contact Vince Guerrero at 545-3459. ❖ Seattle Mariners vs. New York Yankees trip scheduled for Sunday, September 7th has been canceled due to lack of participation. ❖ A new session of Sewing with Marcy begins September 15th and will run until December 15th (no class 9/29 and 10/6). This class takes place on Mondays from 12:30 - 3:30 p.m. Cost is $25.50 for City of Pasco residents and $27.50 for non residents. To register call 545- 8285 or stop by on the first day of class. All levels of sewers are welcomed (adults only please). ❖ The 15th Annual All Senior Picnic will be held in Howard Amon Park next to the Richland Community Center on Thursday, September 18th from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Picnic buttons go on Sale Tuesday, July 1, 2007. Cost is $5.00 per person. Buttons can be purchased at the Richland Community Center and at the Pasco and Kennewick Senior Centers. For more information call 545-3459. ❖ Discover the Gorge! A trip through the beautiful Columbia Gorge is being offered September 28 thru October 1, 2008. This is an all- inclusive excursion that includes three nights at the Hood River Inn; Columbia Gorge Sternwheeler; Historic Mount Hood Railroad featuring an authentic chuck wagon lunch; Columbia River Gorge Discovery Center and the Western Antique Automobile and Aeroplane Museum (WAAAM) featuring one of the largest fully operational collections in the nation. There are also many optional activities available. Cost is $785 per person for single occupancy or $731 per person for double occupancy. This trip is presented by the Washington State Association of Senior Centers and True North Productions. ❖ Cruise Lake Chelan - Explore Stehekin. This trip is being offered Saturday, October 18, 2008 from 5:45 am to 10 pm. We will leave from the Pasco Senior Center parking lot and travel to Lake Chelan by Chartered Tour Bus and Board the Lady Express for their Fall Excursion. The Lady leaves the dock at 10 am and arrives in Stehekin at 12:30 pm. We will have a one-hour layover where you are free to take a stroll through the town of Stehekin or you can take the popular Rainbow Falls Tour for an additional $7 per person. We will then board the Lady for our trip back arriving at Chelan at 4 pm. Cost for this trip is $99 for City of Pasco residents and $109 for non-residents. You may register at the Pasco Senior Center, The Pasco Recreation Services office or on line at www.pasco-wa.gov. ❖ Two Spokane Best of Broadway shows are currently being offered. The Phantom of the Opera Phantom of the Date: Thursday, October 9, 2008 Opera has sold Time: 10:00 a.m. - 8:30 p.m. out. A wait list is available. Ain't Misbehaving Date: Thursday, March 19, 2009 Time: 1:30 p.m. - 12:30 a.m. (March 20, 2009) Location:Spokane Opera House Ages: Adult Cost: 104*/$114 (Orchestra) The registration deadline for this trip is February 19, 2009 *City of Pasco residents pay the discounted price. You may register in person at the Pasco Recreation Services office (525 S. 3rd), the Pasco Senior Center (1315 N. 7th Ave.) or on line at www.pasco-wa.gov. Old Business ❖ Vince Guerrero covered an update on Senior Picnic button sales. ❖ Vince Guerrero covered an update on the Dental Hygiene program that will be offered at the Pasco Senior Center. ❖ Katie Barton asked for an update on the possible name change of the Pasco Senior Center. Paul Whitemarsh stated that no action has been taken regarding this matter. ❖ Paul Whitemarsh gave an update on the aquatics measure that will appear on the August 19th ballot. New Business ❖ Linda Hendrickson-Patrick would like to know if the high cost of fuel and food has brought more seniors into the center. Vince stated that it is just the opposite. Seniors are not driving as much so they are not attending as many activities at the Senior Center. With no further business the meeting was adjourned at 10:45 am. The next meeting will be held Tuesday September 9, 2008 at 10:00 am. Chairperson will be Linda Hendrickson-Patrick.
