HomeMy WebLinkAbout09-09-2008 Senior Center Advisory Committee Minutes City of Pasco Senior Citizen's Advisory Committee Tuesday September 9, 2008 The meeting was called to order at 10:05 am by Chairperson Linda Hendrickson-Patrick. Members Present: Ron Van Nostrand and Linda Hendrickson-Patrick. Members absent: Katie Barton and John Evans (excused; out of town). Tom Larsen was present representing the Pasco City Council. Staff Present: Paul Whitemarsh, Vince Guerrero and Marie Schiefelbein. Minutes of the August 12, 2008 meeting were approved as written. Vince Guerrero covered the ALTC program updates for the month of July 2008. Vince Guerrero covered the Senior Center Highlights and upcoming events including: ❖ A Wild Wild West Dinner and Dance was held on August 4th. Thirty- two people attended the dinner and forty people were at the dance. ❖ Thanks to all who donated to the S.H.A.K.E. program. The Pasco Senior Center was able to collect two large boxes full of supplies that were donated to local schools. These supplies will be given to children whose families could not afford to purchase school supplies. ❖ A Wildhorse Day Trip took place August 12th with sixteen people attending. ❖ A western dance was held on August 20th. Numbers for this dance are not available at this time. ❖ A Medicare Informational Day was held on August 21St. Approximately 8 people attended. ❖ A trip to Kayak the Hanford Reach took place on August 23 rd Fourteen people attended including four senior citizens. ❖ A Financial Advisory Hour and Ice Cream Social took place August 28tH Attendance numbers are not available. ❖ The trip to Seattle to watch the Mariners take on the New York Yankees on September 7th was canceled due to lack of participation. ❖ The Best of Broadway's Phantom of Opera trip to Spokane on October 9th is sold out. ❖ Fifteen people from the state of Washington registered to take the Shades of Ireland Trip sponsored by the Washington State Association of Senior Centers. This trip began on September 5 th ❖ New sessions of Enhance Fitness and Senior Stretch and Tone will begin September 3ra ❖ A Spaghetti Feed is planned for October 6th at 12:00 noon. Cost is $4.00 per person. Tickets are required and must be purchased by 5:00 p.m. Thursday, October 2nd ❖ A new session of Sewing with Marcy begins September 15th and will run until December 15th (no class 9/29 and 10/6). This class takes place on Mondays from 12:30 - 3:30 p.m. Cost is $25.50 for City of Pasco residents and $27.50 for non residents. To register call 545- 8285 or stop by on the first day of class. All levels of sewers are welcomed (adults only please). ❖ A new session of Yoga begins on September 16th and runs until October 23rd. The class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Pasco Senior Center from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. ❖ A new session of Drawing with Jerre Raven begins on September 17th ❖ The 15th Annual All Senior Picnic will be held in Howard Amon Park next to the Richland Community Center on Thursday, September 18th from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Picnic buttons go on Sale Tuesday, July 1, 2007. Cost is $5.00 per person. Buttons can be purchased at the Richland Community Center and at the Pasco and Kennewick Senior Centers. For more information call 545-3459. ❖ A kayak tour and dinner at Anthony's will take place Friday, September 19th from 1:30 - 6:30 p.m. Cost is $49 for City of Pasco residents and $54 for non-residents. This fee includes Kayak, equipment, shuttle, guides and dinner. Registration deadline is September 15th. Adults only please. ❖ Discover the Gorge! A trip through the beautiful Columbia Gorge is being offered September 28 thru October 1, 2008. This is an all- inclusive excursion that includes three nights at the Hood River Inn; Columbia Gorge Sternwheeler; Historic Mount Hood Railroad featuring an authentic chuck wagon lunch; Columbia River Gorge Discovery Center and the Western Antique Automobile and Aeroplane Museum (WAAAM) featuring one of the largest fully operational collections in the nation. There are also many optional activities available. Cost is $785 per person for single occupancy or $731 per person for double occupancy. This trip is presented by the Washington State Association of Senior Centers and True North Productions. ❖ A Spaghetti Feed will take place at the Pasco Senior Center on Monday, October 6th at 12:00 noon. Tickets are required and must be purchased by October 2nd. Cost is just $4 per person. ❖ Cruise Lake Chelan - Explore Stehekin. This trip is being offered Saturday, October 18, 2008 from 5:45 am to 10 pm. We will leave from the Pasco Senior Center parking lot and travel to Lake Chelan by Chartered Tour Bus and Board the Lady Express for their Fall Excursion. The Lady leaves the dock at 10 am and arrives in Stehekin at 12:30 pm. We will have a one-hour layover where you are free to take a stroll through the town of Stehekin or you can take the popular Rainbow Falls Tour for an additional $7 per person. We will then board the Lady for our trip back arriving at Chelan at 4 pm. Cost for this trip is $99 for City of Pasco residents and $109 for non-residents. You may register at the Pasco Senior Center, The Pasco Recreation Services office or on line at www.pasco-wa.gov. ❖ The Best of Broadway presents: Ain't Misbehaving Date: Thursday, March 19, 2009 Time: 1:30 p.m. - 12:30 a.m. (March 20, 2009) Location:Spokane Opera House Ages: Adult Cost: 104*/$114 (Orchestra) The registration deadline for this trip is February 19, 2009. *City of Pasco residents pay the discounted price. You may register in person at the Pasco Recreation Services office (525 S. 3rd), the Pasco Senior Center (1315 N. 7th Ave.) or on line at www.gasco-wa.gov. For more information contact Allison at 545-3456. Old Business ❖ Vince Guerrero covered an update on the Dental Hygiene Program. This program has been canceled. The wording in the House Bill that created it did not allow us to continue to offer services. New Business ❖ An intergenerational Halloween party is being planned for October 30tH We will be advertising this to schools and the Boys and Girls Club. Paul Whitemarsh suggested that we need to take reservations and limit the number of participants that can attend. ❖ The annual Yokes Holiday Dinner will be December 11th. We will begin taking reservations in November. With no further business the meeting was adjourned at 10:20 am. The next meeting will be held Tuesday October 14, 2008 at 10:00 am. Chairperson will be John Evans.
