HomeMy WebLinkAbout02.03.11 Park Board Minutes PARK & RECREATION ADVISORY COUNCIL MINUTES February 3, 2011 In attendance: Tom Davenport Cheryl Smith Duane Taber Edmon Daniels Michael Mathews Abigail Kidd Saul Martinez Staff: Rick Terway, Director, A&CS, Dan Dotta, Facilities Manager and Carleen Hanscom, Recreation Services Manager. Meeting was called to order at 5:30 p.m. Minutes of the 12/2/2010 meeting were approved unanimously. STAFF REPORTS Recreation • Cable Bridge Run registrations were the highest ever with just under 2,300 people registered • First Night Event—was very successful with lots of attendance • Youth Basketball Games have started and are going great • Men's City League and Church League Basketball programs are going very strong this season • We participated in a PAC (parent advisory committee) event at Chiawana High School to promote our recreation program to Spanish speaking families— it was a great event and we had a lot of interest • Shelter Rentals for 2011 season have started • Staff are currently working on the Spring/Summer 2011 Recreation Guide • Adding new camps and programs • If anyone has ideas or knows someone who might be interested in teaching, please let me know • Talked about the video shown and how we need to continue to focus on activities for youth and teens in our community to keep them off the streets o We are looking at ways to bring back the Night Court program, this was an open gym program offered to youth and teens for free in the evening hours ■ Staff are putting together costs, times, location options and possible community partners Maintenance Personnel Activity • Attended Monthly Safety Meetings • Completed Electronic Learning Modules • Attended Pesticide Spray class Park& Facility Projects • Leaf removal • Tumbleweed removal • Snow removal • Wired in three new lights in Memorial basement • Repaired and tuned equipment • Repaired and painted walls at City Hall • Painted break room and two offices at maintenance shop • Built shelving at maintenance shop • Pulled irrigation pump for 36 Soccer for repairs • Assisted contractor with electrical for the door openers at Multi Model • Replace irrigation controller damaged in hit and run incident on Heritage Blvd. • Pruned shrubs at the Library • Painted park signs Cemetery • Preformed 6 funerals; 5 burials and 1 cremations • Completed 2 pre-need contracts and install 5 headstones • Leaf removal • Tumbleweed removal Special Events • Contractor installed new door openers at Multi Model • Contractor installed new HVAC units at MLK Director Mr. Terway updated council on the Park, Recreation and Forestry Plan update and the Chiawana Park Restroom, playground and trail extension projects. Council and staff discussed the progress of Linda Loviisa Park and possible park development at the Road 60 school site. Pesticide use on Corp of Engineers property was also discussed. The meeting was adjourned at 6:30 p.m.
