HomeMy WebLinkAbout06.03.10 Park Board Minutes PARK& RECREATION ADVISORY COUNCIL MINUTES June 3, 2010 In attendance: Grace Adams Tom Davenport Cheryl Smyth Duane Taber Edmon Daniels Michael Mathews Abigail Kidd Rebecca Francik—Council Representative Staff. Rick Terway, Director Administrative and Community Services, Dan Dotta, Facilities Services Manager, Carleen Hanscom, Recreation Services Manager and Nolan Harper, Lead Recreation Specialist. Meeting was called to order at 5:30 p.m. STAFF REPORTS Recreation Carleen: • We are busy getting Memorial Pool ready for the Channel Cats swim meet that starts tomorrow June 4 and runs through June 6. There will be 493 swimmers competing. • We are finishing up our first lifeguard training course of the season. We have 18 people taking this course and it will be completed on June 5th. Just in time to hire the passes for the summer. • Announced that Dwayne Taber has been selected as our Grand Marshal for the Grand Old 4th of July Parade. • Reminder that our Grand Re-Opening Event for Memorial Pool is being held June 19th from 1-5pm. Everyone is welcome and we would love to see some of our Park and Recreation Advisory Council Members there. Our focus at this event will be on introducing the new facility to the public and education on water safety. • Passed around samples of the summer flyer that went to the Pasco School District. Nolan: • The Karate program is contracted with Tri-City Black Belt Academy of Pasco. Program started this spring and registration averaged about 20 youth per session for the months of April & May. During this time the program was held at Pasco City Hall gym, but has been moved to Tri-City Black Belt Academy because the entire floor is padded with mats. A session will be offered in June and July this summer. Currently there are 10 participants signed up for the June session. • Novice Soccer currently has 56 kids signed up for the program, which teaches the basics of soccer to youth ages 4-8. Soccer players from the two local high schools were hired to provide instruction. • Youth Bowling is a new activity that was started last summer at Go-Bowl in Pasco. This activity proved to be popular among youth as both sessions were full last summer. The program will again be offered this summer at Go-Bowl. • The Pee Wee Tennis 5-9 year age group is currently full. A waiting list has been started to accommodate others who want to sign up for the class. The tennis coach of McLoughlin Middle School is currently providing instruction for the class. • Other traditional programs such as gymnastics and cheerleading continue to do well. Maintenance Personnel Activity • Attended Monthly Safety Meetings • Attended Chlorine handling class • Attended training for Memorial pool equipment Park& Facility Projects • Pruned various shrub beds • Irrigation repairs: 7 mainline 3 lateral breaks • Filled Memorial pool • Fill Richardson pool • Tumbleweed cleanup • Painted and installed life guard stands at Memorial pool • Installed soap, toilet paper and paper towel dispensers at Memorial pool • Installed back flow preventer at Memorial pool Cemetery • Preformed 4 funerals; 4 burials and 0 cremations • Planted eight new trees • Memorial Day celebration Special Events • Hosted WIAA regional and state tournaments and CSSA tournament • Trenched and laid new conduit for fiber at the Cemetery and shop • Trenched, laid new conduit and rewired shelter one at Chiawana Park Director • Laurel Strand, representing Leadership Tri-Cities Class XV, gave a presentation on the MLK Mural project and invited all to the unveiling of the mural on June 9th. She also presented the city with a$1000 endowment check for the project. • The Memorial Pool project is coming to a close,with the final system checks being done th and opening scheduled for June 12 • Discussed moving forward with a request to place a bench and memorial plaque on Sacajawea Heritage Trail in honor of Dr. Ray Rose attesting to his support of the trail. • Informed the Board there will be 2011 budget reductions.No specific cuts were discussed at this time. • Ed Powers, representing Grid Kids, gave a presentation noting their new focus as an instructional league not a competitive league. He also requested support in locating land to build additional fields. The meeting was adjourned at 6:35 p.m.
