HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-02-2008 Parks and Recreation Advisory Council Minutes PARK& RECREATION ADVISORY COUNCIL October 2,2008 In attendance: Duane Taber,Mike Mathews,Edmon Daniels, Grace Adams, Sheryl Smyth, Tom Davenport and Rebecca Francik. Staff: Stan Strebel,Administrative and Community Services Director and Paul Whitemarsh,Recreation Services Manager and Dan Dotta, Facilities Services Manager. Excused: Curt Shaw. The meeting was called to order at 5:30 p.m. by Chairman Duane Taber. The September 4 minutes were approved on motion by Mike Mathews. STAFF REPORTS Recreation Paul reported that the YMCA Director has still not been replaced. Programs are continuing. Indoor soccer has been very popular the King Center with many practices taking place at the facility. The City Council has authorized the continuation of Cyber Stop for an additional year. The Sacajawea Heritage Trail Adventure was held on September 20 with over 400 participants(good attendance considering the poor weather of that day). Paul also reported that the recent bass tournament in the Tri-Cities was a great success and the community gets a great deal of publicity from the event. Also, ongoing flag football, fall softball and various fall activities. The 30th Annual Cable Bridge Run will be held on December 20. Staff is increasing the advertising for the event, including some advertisements on Ben Franklin Transit buses. Facilities Dan provided a brief report. Pools have been drained, fall fertilizer has been applied and repairs to the softball scoreboard have been made. Projects are underway for extension of sidewalk in Volunteer Park and reconstruction of the parking area. Improvements for the drainage at the King Center will shortly be bid. Name for park in First Place Subdivision. There was a brief discussion on possible names for the park. Tom noted that Cathedral is the name of the street on which the park is located. This is a possibility. Rebecca asked if some geological formations might be used. Staff will research this. Staff will provide a number of possible alternatives for the next meeting. Stan gave an updated on the Memorial Pool renovations. Partially on the basis of the Advisory Council's recommendation City Council has agreed to go forward with the renovations for Memorial Pool in the approximate amount of$3 million dollars. It was not felt there was sufficient resources to be able to purchase property for a new facility at this time,however,that may be a possibility later. In order to make sure that the City Council is satisfied with the scoping for the Memorial Pool renovations (possibilities include adding play features, discussion on enclosure, diving depth, etc.) ORB will make a presentation to the City Council on Monday, October 27, at 7:00 p.m. regarding the various costs and alternatives that are available. The members of the Advisory Council are invited to attend to provide any input that they have. There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 6:15 p.m.
