STAFF REPORTS
Recreation
Stan presented a review of reports on Recreation in Paul's absence. The YMCA is still seeking a
Director. There were a number of special programs this past month: scarecrow workshop, hayride and
pumpkin carving events, as well as a Halloween dance at the Senior Center. Fall programs include:
hunters education, adult volleyball, scaled down soccer and adult and youth flag football. The Recreation
brochure for the winter will be out in the Tri-City Herald on November 18. The Senior Center recently
had successful activities; an outing to Lake Chelan and Phantom of the Opera in Spokane. The three day
flu clinic provided nearly 1,200 vaccinations.
Maintenance
Crews are busy winterizing systems and buildings. The Cemetery has been busy. The expansion at the
Cemetery has recently been completed. Grass is starting to grow. Special events have included Girl and
Boy Scout tree plantings at Casa del Sol Park as well as the Heritage Trail grand opening.
The committee turned to consideration of a name for the park in First Place subdivision. Staff had
provided a series of names of streets in the subdivision as well as some suggestions. Names nominated
for consideration included Cathedral,Horizon,Plateau,High Plateau and Bermuda Dunes. After a vote
was taken Bermuda Dunes was the preferred name for the park. Stan noted that with a street in the
subdivision also named Bermuda Dunes, hopefully there would not be confusion with people looking for
the park on that street. Tom noted that the park is near the entrance to the subdivision, right off the
roundabout so probably there would be no conflict. Stan will provide a map of the subdivision at the next
meeting.
Memorial Pool Remodel
Stan reviewed the presentation that the Council had recently received for Memorial Pool options,
including the analysis for indoor and outdoor facility attendance and three cost options. The City Council
was impressed with the "renovation"approach, which if it can be accomplished for less than the
traditional renovation of the pool, could save money making it possible for the installation of a 3,500 sq.
ft. leisure pool and play toys. This may help the pool to be more cost effective in operation, drawing
more visitors each year.
After considerable discussion Advisory Council members were pleased with the idea of adding a leisure
pool also. Stan indicated that if the Council signs a design contract, the schedule calls for construction to
begin in September with completion of the facility in May of 2010 for the summer season. After the first
of the year he expects that the consultant will have some design issues which will be discussed with
Advisory Council members for further input.
Stan indicated there will be no need for a meeting in December. The next meeting will be after the first of
the year. (January 8th due to January lst being on Thursday.)
Cheryl asked if Pasco had a skate board park. Stan indicated that the City had contributed to the
construction of the skate board parks Kennewick and more recently in Richland. While we have had
people from time to time to address this issue, there seemed to be no sustained interest in this.
With there being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 6:15 p.m.
