HomeMy WebLinkAbout03-01-2007 Parks and Recreation Advisory Council Minutes PARK& RECREATION ADVISORY COUNCIL NOTES March 1, 2007 (There was no quorum present) In attendance: Duane Taber, Rebecca Francik and Steve Putnam. Staff: Stan Strebel, Administrative and Community Services Director, Paul Whitemarsh, Recreation Services Manager and Dan Dotta, Facilities Services Manager. Keith Lawler, Commander of the local American Legion Post, addressed the group regarding the proposed movement of the old Veteran's Memorial (currently located in Columbia Park) to Memorial Park. He provided a newspaper article from a Tri-City newspaper of 1944 which indicated that Memorial Park was donated by the American Legion to the City with the proviso that the park be used for not only a swimming pool but also for a war memorial. Evidentially no memorial was ever placed in the park. The Veteran's of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the City of Kennewick have tentatively agreed to allow the old war memorial moved from Columbia Park. There was some discussion concerning possible location in Memorial Park. It appeared that the best location may be at the corner of 14th and Bonneville if sufficiently set back so as not to be a traffic hazard. There was a discussion about the type of flagpole that would be used. Mr. Lawler indicated that it would be possibly be designed by PUD engineers and engineered to withstand winds and other forces as well as to be vandal proof. He has tentatively contacted a local landscaping firm to provide a design for the relocation of the various elements of the memorial. Mr. Lawler also suggested that the name of the park be officially changed to "Veteran's Memorial Park". Mr. Lawler will continue to refine plans and attend the next meeting on April 5 with the Park Board. Staff gave brief reports on recreation and facilities maintenance activities as well as an update on the stadium and golf course projects. It has been recommended that Duane Taber and Steve Putnam be appointed by the Mayor to serve on the committee to review the I.R.I. golf course lease.
