OTHER BUSINESS
• Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center
Public Works CIP Manager Ryan Mahaffey informed the Commission that there were no updates to
provide at this time.
Commissioner Baker raised an accessibility concern that she had discussed with members of the
community. Community members expressed a desire to have access to the conference room for family
gatherings, birthday celebrations, and other community activities. Commissioner Baker conveyed that
some community members feel that a space in which they have historically played a significant role is
no longer accessible to them. She stated that, if possible, they would appreciate an estimated date for
when the space may again be available for community use.
Ryan explained that the community is anticipated to have access to the area following the completion of
Phase 2 of the project. At this time, however, there is no projected completion date, as the City is
working to secure funding to begin the next phase of the project. Funding has not yet been secured.

Ryan further explained that there is currently no safe exterior access to the area for community
members. Interior access is also not available because the area is currently occupied by Benton Franklin
Head Start, which is not accessible to the general public.
Commissioner Baker asked whether the area could be made accessible if funding were identified to
create an exterior access point. Ryan explained that, while the City could consider such an option, any
individual or organization providing funding or completing the work would need to understand that the
improvements would ultimately be removed when Phase 2 begins in order to accommodate the current
project plans. He also noted that supervision of the area would be necessary during the hours of public
use, and the center does not currently have the staffing capacity to provide that supervision.
Commissioner Baker stated that she had not been aware of the accessibility issue when the project was
previously discussed. Ryan indicated that the Commission had been informed of the planned project
limitations and that the information had also been shared with community members during the City's
outreach sessions.
Commissioner Baker asked what steps the Commission could take to assist with the situation. Ryan
explained that, if the Commission wished to explore potential funding for a temporary solution, they
could pursue that option; however, there would still be several considerations and requirements that
would need to be addressed before such an arrangement could move forward.
Devi Tate stated that she has relationships with several developers and offered to assist in exploring
potential resources or funding opportunities.
