“Kurtzman Park Historic Designation”

WHEREAS, the City of Pasco, Washington, cherishes its diverse cultural heritage and recognizes the importance of preserving significant historical properties; and WHEREAS, Kurtzman Park, located at 331 S Wehe Ave., Pasco, has been officially listed in the
National Register of Historic Places, joining other esteemed properties that contribute to the rich cultural
legacy of Washington State; and WHEREAS, established in 1953, Kurtzman Park holds immense historical significance as it is directly associated with the history of Black Americans in Pasco, serving as a testament to their
struggles, achievements, and contributions to our community; and WHEREAS, Kurtzman Park was initially established in response to the passionate plea of local youth who desired a public space to recreate and socialize, and over the years, it has become a cherished venue for sporting events, social gatherings, and educational opportunities for the residents of Pasco;
and WHEREAS, in an era marked by segregation and discrimination, Kurtzman Park and its Youth Center emerged as the heart of the Black community, both physically and metaphorically, hosting numerous meetings and serving as a hub for civil rights activism; and
WHEREAS, the recent listing of Kurtzman Park in the National Register of Historic Places is the culmination of a comprehensive effort to document and celebrate the rich history of Black Americans in Pasco, with the nomination and accompanying "The Black American Experience in Pasco" property document supported by an Under-Represented Communities Grant from the National Park Service; and
WHEREAS, the National Register of Historic Places is the esteemed repository of the tangible reminders of United States history, preserving and recognizing cultural resources of exceptional value; NOW, THEREFORE, I, Blanche Barajas, Mayor of the City of Pasco, Washington, do recognize
“Kurtzman Park Historic Designation” and encourage the community to meet and gather at Kurtzman
Park enjoying many cherished events, social gatherings and educational opportunities. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Official Seal of the City of Pasco, State of Washington, to be affixed this 17th day of June 2023.
