HomeMy WebLinkAbout2025.12.01 Council Comments from A ParraGood evening. My name is Alondra Parra I live in Richland but I work in Pasco.
I'm here as a parent of a student who attends Nueva Esperanza Leadership
Academy which is located off A street and within the Tierra Vida community to
request the installation of a clearly marked crosswalk after entering Tierra
Vida Ln. This location currently lacks a safe pedestrian crossing, even though
it is used daily by students, families, school staff, and neighborhood
residents. During morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal, dozens of
children and parents cross the street at this location. Many also walk to
nearby bus stops, homes, and community facilities. Vehicles frequently travel
at high speeds along this stretch, and drivers often do not slow down or stop
because there is no designated crossing. Throughout the day school staff
have to stop traffic to allow students to cross to the playground during recess
and to use the Rec Center facility located in the TV community. This creates a
hazardous environment where children must judge gaps in traffic rather than
rely on a protected crossing point. The curve/parked cars restrict visibility for
both pedestrians and drivers, increasing risk especially during early morning
hours and now with the sun setting earlier in the evening. This will benefit the
entire community, residents who walk to nearby bus stops, families with
young children, and drivers because a designated crosswalk reduces
unexpected pedestrian movements and improves traffic flow.
We respectfully request that the city conducts a traffic and safety evaluation
between the Collegium Cafe and NELA on TV Ln. Approve installation of a high
visibility crosswalk, potentially combined with pedestrian signage, flashing
beacons, or curb extensions, whichever the traffic engineers deem
appropriate.
Thank you for your time.
