HomeMy WebLinkAboutJuneteenth 6-19-2024Proclamation “Juneteenth Day” June 19, 2024 WHEREAS, Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, or Jubilee Day, is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States; and WHEREAS, on June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of the Civil War and the emancipation of all enslaved African Americans, enforcing President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation issued on January 1, 1863; and WHEREAS, Juneteenth serves as a significant milestone in American history, symbolizing the triumph of the human spirit over the cruelty of slavery and a reminder of the ongoing journey toward freedom and equality for all; and WHEREAS, the celebration of Juneteenth promotes unity, reflection, and an opportunity to learn about and appreciate the rich cultural heritage and contributions of African Americans to our society; and WHEREAS, the City of Pasco recognizes the importance of acknowledging and addressing the historical injustices that have led to ongoing disparities and commits to fostering an inclusive and equitable community for all its residents; and WHEREAS, this day serves as an opportunity to honor the resilience, perseverance, and achievements of African Americans and to recommit ourselves to the pursuit of justice and equality; and NOW, THEREFORE, I, Pete Serrano, Mayor of the City of Pasco, Washington, do hereby proclaim June 19, 2024 as “Juneteenth Day” in the City of Pasco and encourage all residents to join in celebrating this historic event, reflecting on the significant contributions of African Americans, and working together towards a future of equality and justice for all.
