March 2023
WHEREAS, in 1978 the Sonoma, California school district organized a weeklong celebration of
women's contributions to culture, history and society, giving presentations at dozens of schools
where hundreds of students participated in a "Real Woman" essay contest and held a parade in
downtown Santa Rosa; and
WHEREAS, in the years that followed, many communities, organizations, and school districts
began organizing their own women's history celebrations; and
WHEREAS, the United Nations began observing March 8th as International Women's Day in
1975; and
WHEREAS, in 1980, President Jimmy Carter Issued the first presidential proclamation
declaring the week of March 8th Women's History Week, in 1981 U.S. Congress passed a resolution
establishing the national celebration, and in 1987 the recognition of Women's History was extended
to the entire month March; and
WHEREAS, during the month of March we celebrate the contributions women have made to
every facet of life throughout our Nation's history and to pay tribute to the battles they have fought
in the name of equality; and
WHEREAS, the 2023 theme, "Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories", recognizes "women,
past and present, who have been active in all forms of media and storytelling", and through the
power of communication gave voice and strength to women's collective triumphs, struggles, and
communities; and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Blanche Barajas, Mayor of the City of Pasco, Washington, do hereby
proclaim March 2023 as
"Women's History Month".
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Official Seal of the City of
Pasco, State of Washington, to be affixed this 201h day of March 2023.
